The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the \u201clong rains,\u201d but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/meteo.go.ke\/sites\/default\/files\/forecast\/biometeorological\/Biomet%20weekly%20Bulletin%20valid%2023rd%20to%2029th%20April%202024.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meteorological Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More than 30,000 people have been displaced in the capital, Nairobi, where some of the heaviest rain has fallen, according to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/publications\/report\/kenya\/kenya-heavy-rains-and-flooding-update-flash-update-2-19-april-2024\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs<\/a>. On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RedCrossKE\/posts\/pfbid0kM9JXBvkC9n4o6kS9mahAEJ36M9afA371mBkVSEDEzyuY3pruQuws6gZJJKyRu2hl\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kenya Red Cross Society<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edwinsifuna\/status\/1783037461653823744\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> that the local government there was \u201cclearly overwhelmed,\u201d and he called on the federal government for help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,\u201d he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/InteriorKE\/status\/1783378180834824700\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in a social media post<\/a> on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KURAroads\/status\/1783038957518745884\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partially closed<\/a> four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/meteo.go.ke\/sites\/default\/files\/5day-forecast\/5-Day%20Weather%20Forecast%20valid%2025th%20to%2029th%20April%202024.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the forecast<\/a> for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday.
