Though there was seeming consensus among the justices that the criminal case could eventually go forward based on Trump\u2019s private actions, the additional proceedings could make it hard to conduct the trial before the 2024 election in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If Trump wins the White House, he can order the Justice Department to drop the charges against him. But aid workers and defense officials said that the maritime project is not an adequate substitute for more overland aid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Defense officials expected the project to be completed early next month. Experts have said that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-famine-report-starvation.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">famine is likely to set in<\/a> within Gaza by the end of May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-9d43aab\">Harvey Weinstein\u2019s New York conviction overturned<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">New York\u2019s highest court <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/25\/nyregion\/weinstein-conviction-overturned-takeaways.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">overturned Harvey Weinstein\u2019s 2020 conviction on felony sex crime charges<\/a>, a reversal that horrified many of the women whose decision to speak out against Weinstein, a prominent Hollywood producer, accelerated the #MeToo movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The court said that the trial judge who presided over the sex crimes case made a critical error by allowing prosecutors to call as witnesses several women who testified that Weinstein had assaulted them, even though none of those allegations had led to charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Weinstein is still not a free man. It\u2019s a leafy suburb. There are sidewalk cafes. People are chatting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the majority of people who are enjoying that progress are white. And the majority of people who are servers or in low-wage jobs are Black. Black South Africans simply haven\u2019t caught up in terms of wealth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Let\u2019s fast-forward to next month\u2019s election. What is the mood?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The A.N.C.\u2019s popularity is possibly at its lowest, and it has never had to work so hard to convince South Africans to vote for them. Some young people see this vote as being as pivotal as 1994\u2019s. Many are deeply disillusioned. High unemployment and corruption scandals have eroded their faith in politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Opposition parties are stepping up and saying, \u201cWe are finally in a place where we think we can lead now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That is a huge shift from 1994, which felt like an affirmation of Nelson Mandela and his party, and the end of apartheid.
