CANBERRA, Australia (AP) \u2014 Australia\u2019s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/a><\/span><\/span> on Monday described domestic violence as a \u201cnational crisis\u201d after thousands rallied around the country against violence toward women.<\/p>\n

Thousands protested in cities around Australia on Sunday to draw attention to the deaths of 27 women so far this year allegedly caused by acts of gender-based violence in a population of 27 million.<\/p>\n

Albanese said on Monday the rallies were a call to action for all levels of Australian government to do more to prevent gender-based violence.<\/p>\n

“Quite clearly, we need to do more. It\u2019s not enough to just have empathy,\u201d Albanese told Nine Network television.<\/p>\n

“The fact that … a woman dies every four days on average at the hand of a partner is just a national crisis,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

There were 17 rallies held across Australia over the weekend, with an estimated 15,000 people demonstrating in the city of Melbourne.<\/p>\n

Albanese said he will host a meeting or Australian state and territory leaders on W<\/p>\n

ednesday to discuss a coordinated response.<\/p>\n

Albanese, his Women\u2019s Minister Katy Gallagher and Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth received a hostile response when they attended a rally in the capital Canberra on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Protesters yelled at the government leaders, \u201cwe want action\u201d and \u201cdo your job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Albanese said there needed to be more focus on perpetrators and prevention of violence. \u201cWe need to change the culture, we need to change attitudes \u2014 we need to change the legal system,\u201d Albanese told the rally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
