Some of the major figures in these movies have been known to jump on their directors, fall asleep on the job, drool on camera and chew the scenery (in every sense).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But that\u2019s no surprise: They\u2019re among the four-legged performers in the sixth annual <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/catfilmfestival.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NY Cat Film Festival<\/a> and the eighth annual <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dogfilmfestival.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NY Dog Film Festival<\/a>. Each offers short documentary and fictional works illustrating how people affect the lives of animals, and how animals affect the lives of people \u2014 usually in positive ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI try to keep them to films that are lighter and that simply uplift you,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/traciehotchnerpets.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tracie Hotchner<\/a>, the founder of both festivals, said in a video interview. And even though some of the featured dogs and cats are in difficult circumstances, the movies, she added, are \u201cmore of a celebration of the groups that rescue them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These grass-roots film programs also benefit their subjects: Of the $18 all-inclusive ticket price for each festival, 10 percent goes to a pet-adoption nonprofit. (The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.angelikafilmcenter.com\/villageeast\/showtimes-and-tickets\/coming-soon\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan screenings<\/a> will help support <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.muddypawsrescue.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Muddy Paws Rescue<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meowparlour.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meow Parlour Cats<\/a>.) And fans who can\u2019t see the programs this weekend may be able to catch them in the coming months when they tour to independent cinemas nationwide and in Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThese are not, you know, Hollywood-style movies,\u201d said Hotchner, an author, radio host and podcaster based in Vermont. They\u2019re \u201clike the poetry of films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some are clearly light verse. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/catfilmfestival.com\/the-films\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 102-minute feline festival<\/a>, at noon on Saturday, includes \u201cThe Cat Duet,\u201d by Lorelei De Armas and Julian Wood, 12-year-olds from Detroit who filmed themselves singing \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classicfm.com\/composers\/rossini\/funny-choirboy-cat-duet\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Duetto buffo di due gatti<\/a>,\u201d a comic song often attributed to Rossini. (The only lyric is \u201cMeow.\u201d) <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dogfilmfestival.com\/annual-films\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 110-minute dog festival<\/a>, at noon on Sunday, features <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nepal.arslan\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nepal Arslan<\/a>\u2019s \u201c47 Seconds,\u201d his haiku-like response to discovering decades-old footage of a couple with a dog eerily resembling his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSilent Paws,\u201d by the global initiative <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mutualrescue.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mutual Rescue<\/a>, even incorporates a real poem: a work of the same title by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gabrielspera.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriel Spera<\/a>, which scrolls by during an elegy to lost feline companions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Neither festival, however, has a shortage of serious documentaries. Michelle Williams\u2019s \u201cBear the Courthouse Canine\u201d explores the pivotal role that a gentle Labrador retriever plays for the Contra Costa County, Calif., district attorney. Trained to lie under the witness stand during trials, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.contracosta.ca.gov\/7692\/Facility-Dog#:~:text=Meet%20%E2%80%9CBear%2C%E2%80%9D%20the%20Contra,a%20criminal%20case%2C%20especially%20children.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bear<\/a> comforts traumatized victims who are testifying, especially children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The dogs in \u201cBARC if You Need Help\u201d work on the other side of the criminal justice system. Produced by the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latham.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education<\/a>, this film examines <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accesskent.com\/Courts\/JuvenileDetention\/special_programs.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Building Adolescent Responsibility and Compassion<\/a>, a program in Michigan that recruits juvenile offenders to train animals \u2014 frequently pit bulls that have troubled histories, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s like a mirror for them,\u201d Tula Asselanis, the documentary\u2019s director, said of the teenage participants. And the film suggests that \u201credemption is a powerful possibility, just through using the human-animal bond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But what struck Hotchner most about the festivals\u2019 submissions this year was how much they tried to capture the inner lives of animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With cats, \u201cit\u2019s like, you know, \u2018E.T.,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo this alien comes into your life, and they\u2019re so beautiful and so lovely. But what makes them tick?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The filmmakers\u2019 speculations are often comic, as in \u201cInsomnia,\u201d by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kimberlybest.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Best<\/a>, who provides subtitles detailing a cat\u2019s ruminations on this most unlikely of feline problems: \u201cEmbarrassingly, I considered sleeping with a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other films that venture inside the minds of their subjects include <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thanhouser.org\/about.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ned Thanhouser<\/a>\u2019s docudrama \u201cRanger: Canine Alpinist,\u201d which relies on voice-over to relate the perspective of a dog who assisted human climbers on Mount Hood in Oregon almost a century ago. In the fictional \u201cSet Adrift,\u201d the British director <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferdirector.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Sheridan<\/a> uses only her furry actor\u2019s expressiveness to convey a dog\u2019s grief. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/filmfreeway.com\/FilmingDogs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peta Hitchens<\/a>\u2019s Australian documentary \u201cFilming Dogs\u201d investigates a psychological question: Do pets like her own really enjoy performing for movies and television?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Intriguingly, Juhi Sharma\u2019s comedy \u201cPurrrfect Intervention\u201d features no animals \u2014<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>until the credits. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kishapeart.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kisha Peart<\/a>, who produced and wrote it, stars as a New Yorker so cat-obsessed that her friends arrange treatment for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cObviously, I\u2019m a cat lady,\u201d Peart said, adding that she turned her own pet\u2019s camera shyness into a visual joke. Her character, she said, is \u201cthis crazy cat lady, but where are her cats?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Live animals won\u2019t attend the screenings, either, but they will be at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/catfilmfestival.com\/nyc-premiere-19\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parties<\/a> on the eve of each festival. These celebrations, which require <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dogfilmfestival.com\/new-york-2019\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">separate tickets<\/a>, will feature mingling with the filmmakers and authors of books about pets.
