It was not immediately clear where he had died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kim\u2019s tenure as the leader of North Korea\u2019s propaganda apparatus extended from the days of Kim Il-sung, who founded the country at the end of World War II, to 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/12\/world\/asia\/north-korea-kim-jong-un-propaganda.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Propaganda<\/a> is central to the Kim family\u2019s Stalinist grip on power. The daily coverage of North Korea\u2019s news media, all state-controlled, brims with propaganda designed to keep its 26 million people in the thrall of a personality cult surrounding the ruling family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">All North Koreans are required to wear lapel pins bearing the images of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, the grandfather and father of the current leader, Kim Jong-un. Their portraits hang on the wall of every home and every office building. In school textbooks and TV cartoons, the leaders are depicted as capable of turning tree leaves into boats and pine cones into grenades. In every North Korean town, ubiquitous posters and slogans warn of a coming invasion of \u201cAmerican imperialists\u201d and exhort people to turn themselves into \u201cguns and bombs\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/14\/world\/asia\/north-korea-propaganda-military-broken-glass.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to defend the Kim family.<\/a><\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-1ybnr6m ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">Kim Ki-nam earned comparisons to Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany\u2019s propaganda minister.<\/span><span class=\"css-1u46b97 e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Ahn Young-Joon\/Associated Press<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This was the work of Kim Ki-nam, who earned comparisons to Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany\u2019s propaganda minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kim had been one of the last remaining nonagenarian officials who had survived <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/03\/world\/asia\/north-korea-purge-kim-jong-un-kim-won-hong.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">frequent purges<\/a> and served the Kim family for three generations. He was particularly close to Kim Jong-il and was a regular attendee of the leader\u2019s late-night parties, according to North Korean experts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When he visited Seoul in 2005, he became the first North Korean official to visit the South Korean national cemetery, a gesture he could not have made without the approval of Kim Jong-il. He led another North Korean delegation to Seoul in 2009 to offer condolences for the death of Kim Dae-jung, the former South Korean president who held the first inter-Korean summit with Kim Jong-il in 2000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kim Ki-nam was one of the seven top Workers\u2019 Party officials and People\u2019s Army generals who joined Kim Jong-un to escort the bier of Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the monolithic rule of the Kim family in North Korea\u2019s capital, Pyongyang, top officials outside Kim Jong-un\u2019s immediate kin are ultimately considered expendable. That made Kim Ki-nam\u2019s longevity even more remarkable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He won Kim Jong-un\u2019s trust by helping the young leader <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/10\/world\/asia\/kim-jong-un-north-korea-nuclear.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">establish his domestic leadership<\/a> in the wake of his father\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In what was considered a masterful propaganda scheme by outside analysts, Kim Jong-un was coifed and dressed like his grandfather, Kim Il-sung, when he made his public debut as heir apparent. Kim Il-sung is still revered as a godlike figure by North Koreans.
