I\u2019m not her mother-in-law,\u201d Qu said. \u201cI\u2019m 10 years, 20 years older than you. I didn\u2019t feel bitter about it or tired, even though I have two children. Who are you to tell me that your husband can\u2019t stand it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another clip, Qu shared her personal sacrifices as a working mother. She was working so hard that she forgot her elder son\u2019s birthday and what grade her younger son was in at school. She said she didn\u2019t regret it because she \u201cchose to become a career woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you work in public relations, don\u2019t expect weekends off,\u201d she said in a third video.\u00a0\u201cKeep your phone on 24 hours a day, always ready to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another video, she also threatened to retaliate against employees who complain about her, saying they wouldn\u2019t get another job in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>But now, following the public outcry, Qu has lost her own job at Baidu (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/BIDU?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:BIDU;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">BIDU<\/a>), a person familiar with the matter told CNN on condition of anonymity. CNN has also seen a screenshot of an internal personnel system that appears to confirm she no longer works at the company.<\/p>\n<p>Baidu did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Users\u00a0criticized Qu for her aggressive and insensitive approach and accused her, and Baidu, of\u00a0promoting a toxic workplace.<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"link caas-button readmore-button-finance collapse-button readmore-button-class\" data-ylk=\"elm:readmore;slk:Story continues\"><span class=\"readmoreButtonText\">Story continues<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn her voice and in her tone, there\u2019s deep indifference to and lack of empathy for the common plight of her colleagues,\u201d said Ivy Yang, a China tech analyst and founder of consulting firm Wavelet Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of what she said really struck a nerve, because people feel that in their own workplaces very often. The fact that she said it in a way that\u2019s so direct and\u00a0in your face, it just generated this kind of emotional response,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what the bosses are thinking, and she was merely saying it out aloud,\u201d Yang added.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s young workers have increasingly spoken out against\u00a0the culture of excessive overwork and extreme competitiveness\u00a0that has come to dominate many industries, especially the tech sector.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/15\/business\/jack-ma-996-china\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:drew intense criticism;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">drew intense criticism<\/a> after endorsing the \u201c996\u201d trend, meaning working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, and calling it a \u201chuge blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yang called the backlash against Ma a \u201cwatershed moment\u201d that led people to rethink the relationship between the workplace and themselves \u2014\u00a0a trend that has only intensified as the Chinese economy slows.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s economy grew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/15\/business\/china-q1-gdp-growth-intl-hnk\/index.html#:~:text=China?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo's%20Q1%20GDP%20grows%205.3%25%20thanks%20to%20strong%20manufacturing%20%7C%20CNN%20Business\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:stronger than expected;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">stronger than expected<\/a> at the start of this year, but problems \u2014 including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/06\/economy\/china-economy-real-estate-crisis-intl-hnk\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:property crisis;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">property crisis<\/a>, declining\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/06\/economy\/china-negative-fdi-challenges-hnk-intl\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:foreign investment;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">foreign investment<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/09\/business\/chinas-singles-day-price-war-economic-slowdown-intl-hnk\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:tepid consumption;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">tepid consumption<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 are piling up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen companies demand complete loyalty, time and energy from their employees, employees feel there\u2019s no reciprocity or reward for their sacrifice or contribution, especially when things are slowing down. That becomes the central conflict, and this conflict is also at the heart of the Baidu saga,\u201d Yang added.<\/p>\n<p>As public anger mounted, the videos posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/v.douyin.com\/i2y8Utb1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Qu\u2019s personal Douyin account;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Qu\u2019s personal Douyin account<\/a> were taken down.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Inappropriate points\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>After days of silence, Qu apologized on Thursday for \u201ccausing such a big storm\u201d in a post on her personal account on WeChat, China\u2019s most popular social media app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have carefully read all the opinions and comments from various platforms, and many criticisms are very pertinent. I deeply reflect on and humbly accept them,\u201d Qu wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She also sought to put distance between her remarks and Baidu, saying she had not sought approval beforehand and that they did not represent the company\u2019s stance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were many inappropriate and unsuitable points made in the videos, which led to misunderstandings about the company\u2019s values and culture, causing serious harm,\u201d Qu wrote.<\/p>\n<p>A person familiar with the matter said Qu\u2019s clips were part of her push to amplify Baidu\u2019s voice on short video platforms, which have become an increasingly important channel for information dissemination in China.<\/p>\n<p>Qu had asked all members of the PR team to create their personal accounts, according to the person, who requested anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main purpose is to improve everyone\u2019s ability to make short videos. Everyone can have different options over the content, and Cristina chose to speak about her personal experience,\u201d said the person, referring to Qu\u2019s English name.<\/p>\n<p>Qu worked as a reporter for China\u2019s state news agency Xinhua before switching to the PR industry. She joined Baidu in 2021 from Huawei, a Chinese tech giant known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/16\/tech\/huawei-rise-china\/index.html?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:hard-charging \u201cwolf culture;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">hard-charging \u201cwolf culture<\/a>,\u201d where employees are expected to emulate wolves\u2019 bloodthirsty nature, fearlessness and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>A former Baidu employee said Qu brought Huawei\u2019s aggressive corporate culture with her to Baidu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(She triggered) a pretty big culture shock.
