In March, Russian special services detained Evan Gershkovich, a Russian correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, on espionage charges, which he and The Journal have denied. He <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/10\/world\/europe\/evan-gershkovich-russia-court-arrest.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">remains in a high-security prison<\/a> in Moscow awaiting trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Kurmasheva\u2019s detention, in Kazan, a major city about 500 miles east of Moscow, is likely to further raise suspicions that the Kremlin now views American citizens on its soil as high-profile assets that can be traded for high-value Russians held in United States custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnother hostage has been taken,\u201d Dmitri Kozelev, a prominent Russian journalist, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/kolezev\/14171\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said in his channel<\/a> on the Telegram messaging app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In its <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.rferl.org\/a\/rfe-rl-condemns-detention-of-journalist-alsu-kurmasheva-in-russia\/32644110.html?nocache=1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement about the detention<\/a>, RFE\/RL\u2019s acting president called Ms. Kurmasheva \u201ca highly respected colleague, devoted wife and dedicated mother to two children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe needs to be released so she can return to her family immediately,\u201d the president, Jeffrey Gedmin, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Russian authorities have not issued any statement about the arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Kurmasheva lives in Prague with her husband and children, RFE\/RL said. In May, she traveled to Kazan on \u201ca family emergency.\u201d About two weeks later, while trying to board a returning flight, she was temporarily detained and fined for failing to formally notify the Russian authorities about her United States citizenship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her American and Russian passports were confiscated at that time. According to the statement, she was awaiting their return when the new charges were announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If convicted, Ms. Kurmasheva could be sentenced to up to five years in prison, RFE\/RL said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Under Russian law, individuals and organizations receiving funding from abroad and engaged in loosely defined political activity must register as foreign agents or face prosecution.
