They have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/12\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-kharkiv.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">taken more square miles per day than at almost any other point<\/a> in the war \u2014 save the very beginning \u2014 and are moving near Kharkiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Russian forces launched <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/11\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-kharkiv.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a complex offensive<\/a> on Friday. At least nine villages were seized. Now, some Ukrainian troops are retreating, and some commanders have taken the unusual step of blaming each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine\u2019s top military commander, conceded that the situation had \u201csignificantly worsened.\u201d But he said that Russian attempts to break through Ukrainian defensive lines had been unsuccessful so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Thousands fled to Kharkiv, the nearest big city to the villages. About 20 miles from the border, it is safe \u2014 for the moment. \u201cWe could hear machine gun fire coming closer and closer,\u201d one recently arrived woman said.
