She was 77.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her agent, Sean Clark, confirmed the death, saying that she had suffered a heart attack. He did not specify where in California she lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cJaws,\u201d the 1975 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, memorably features Ms. Backlinie <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yrEvK-tv5OI\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a scene<\/a> in which she played a skinny-dipper, Chrissie Watkins, who runs along the beach and dives into the water for a nighttime swim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The placid scene is shattered as she is suddenly pulled under the water. She screams while being violently thrashed by an unseen great white shark and tries desperately to cling to a clanging buoy only to be pulled below the water one final time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For the scene, Ms. Backlinie was secured to a harness, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/thedailyjaws.com\/news\/susan-backlinie-of-jaws-fame-passes-away-aged-77\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Jaws<\/a>, a website devoted to \u201cthe phenomenon, history, legacy and craft\u201d of \u201cJaws.\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/story\/entertainment\/local\/2017\/06\/19\/jaws-at-42-did\/7039118007\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Palm Beach Post<\/a> reported that Ms. Backlinie was wearing a pair of jeans with metal plates stitched into the sides with cables attached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTo create the effect of being pulled through the water, Susan was tethered to a line anchored to the ocean floor beneath her and deliberately left unaware of when she would be submerged initially, aiming to elicit a more authentic surprise from her,\u201d The Daily Jaws reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an interview with The Post in 2017, Ms. Backlinie recalled Mr. Spielberg telling her, \u201cWhen your scene is done, I want everyone under the seats with the popcorn and bubble gum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said, \u201cI think we did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CNKmqlgOLbw\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cJaws: The Inside Story\u201d documentary<\/a>, Mr. Spielberg described the sequence as \u201cone of the most dangerous\u201d stunts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe was actually being tugged left and right by 10 men on one rope and 10 men on the other back to the shore, and that\u2019s what caused her to move like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Richard Dreyfuss, who starred in the movie as the oceanographer Matt Hooper, explained in the documentary how Ms. Backlinie and Mr. Spielberg had added to the terror of the scene by later recording her screams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Spielberg \u201chad her tilt her head back and he poured water down her throat while she screamed, which is now known as waterboarding,\u201d Mr. Dreyfuss said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Backlinie worked with Mr. Spielberg again in the 1979 parody war film \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0078723\/?ref_=nmbio_mbio\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1941,\u201d<\/a> in which she spoofed her \u201cJaws\u201d character by taking a late-night swim. As the suspenseful score from \u201cJaws\u201d played, she encountered the rising periscope of a Japanese submarine instead of a shark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Susan Backlinie was born on Sept. 1, 1946. At age 10, when she was living in West Palm Beach, Fla., she swam for miles off the coast and in local pools, The Post reported. In high school, she was a cheerleader and a state freestyle swimming champ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She performed as a mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, a tourist attraction on Florida\u2019s west coast, and eventually moved to California.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Backlinie is survived by her husband, Harvey Swindall, according to Mr. Clark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After \u201cJaws,\u201d she continued to work in films, appearing in the horror movie \u201cDay of the Animals\u201d (1977), and as a water ballet performer in Jim Henson\u2019s \u201cThe Great Muppet Caper\u201d (1981).
