He was 78.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He died after a long battle with prostate cancer, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C66jdlAAnOe\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> on his social media channels. He had received the diagnosis in 2018 but had maintained his regular schedule of concerts until recently, with more planned for next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The statement did not say where Mr. Sanborn died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Drawing from jazz, pop and R&amp;B, Mr. Sanborn was highly prolific, releasing 25 albums over a six-decade career. \u201cHideaway\u201d (1980), his fifth studio album, featured two instrumentals written with the singer Michael McDonald as well as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QiLTvdY_m8E\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Seduction,\u201d<\/a> written by Giorgio Moroder, which was the love theme from \u201cAmerican Gigolo,\u201d the ice-cool Paul Schrader film starring Richard Gere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMany releases by studio musicians suffer from weak compositions and overproduction, including some albums by Sanborn himself,\u201d Tim Griggs wrote in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/hideaway-mw0000188637\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a review<\/a> of that album on the website Allmusic. In contrast, he continued, \u201cHideaway\u201d had a \u201cstripped-down, funky\u201d quality that showed off his \u201cpassionate and distinctive saxophone sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Sanborn\u2019s albums \u201cHearsay\u201d (1994), \u201cPearls\u201d (1995) and \u201cTime Again\u201d (2003) all reached <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/david-sanborn\/chart-history\/tlp\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 2<\/a> on the Billboard jazz chart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the records he made under his own name were often pigeonholed as smooth jazz, Mr. Sanborn chafed at the description. So did many of his fellow saxophonists, who found his tone and approach anything but mellow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe \u2018Sanborn\u2019 sound is more of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.neffmusic.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/saxz-dave-sanborn-hard-rubber-alto-saxophone-mouthpiece\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an extreme sound<\/a> tone wise,\u201d the saxophonist and educator Steve Neff wrote on his blog in 2012. \u201cIt is very raw, bright, edgy and tough sounding. It\u2019s right in your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/01\/14\/nyregion\/14brecker.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Michael Brecker<\/a> did for the tenor sound, Sanborn did for the alto sound. It\u2019s not a middle of the road type of sound,\u201d Mr. Neff added. Mr. Brecker and his trumpeter brother, Randy, often collaborated with Mr. Sanborn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Sanborn had little use for labels. \u201cI\u2019m not so interested in what is or isn\u2019t jazz,\u201d he said in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/downbeat.com\/news\/detail\/qa-with-david-sanborn-still-savoring-the-scene\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2017 interview<\/a> with DownBeat, the jazz magazine. \u201cThe guardians of the gate can be quite combative, but what are they protecting? Jazz has always absorbed and transformed what\u2019s around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cReal musicians,\u201d he added, \u201cdon\u2019t have any time to spend thinking about limited categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While growing up in suburban St. Louis, Mr. Sanborn was influenced by the sound of blues in Chicago, and by 14 he was playing with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/12\/23\/arts\/albert-king-a-master-of-the-blues-is-dead-at-69.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Albert King<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/08\/05\/obituaries\/little-milton-71-blues-singer-known-for-his-gritty-style-dies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Little Milton<\/a>. \u201cI guess if push comes to shove, I would describe myself as coming out of the blues-R&amp;B side of the spectrum,\u201d he said in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2008\/08\/02\/93198714\/david-sanborn-a-sax-mans-soul-roots\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2008 interview<\/a> with NPR. \u201cBut I mean, if you play the saxophone, you certainly can\u2019t escape the influence of jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the jazz musicians with whom Mr. Sanborn recorded were the guitarists George Benson, Mike Stern and John Scofield, the bassist Ron Carter, and the arrangers and bandleaders Gil Evans and Bob James.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And his influence was hardly confined to recording. From 1988 to 1990, he hosted the television show <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLd4o4rDrB7L1eWZWfb17lVK5jzeYDWWKc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNight Music\u201d<\/a> (originally called \u201cSunday Night\u201d), which presented an eclectic mix of music; its lineups featured jazz luminaries like Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Pharoah Sanders as well as the likes of James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Sonic Youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Starting in the 1980s, he also hosted a syndicated radio program, \u201cThe Jazz Show With David Sanborn.\u201d He had recently begun producing the podcast <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/1201331649\/as-we-speak-with-david-sanborn\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAs We Speak,\u201d<\/a> which featured conversations with artists including Pat Metheny and Mr. Rollins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A onetime member of the \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d band, he recorded or toured with a constellation of stars, including Paul Simon, James Brown, Elton John, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnyone with a record collection more than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixnewtimes.com\/music\/sax-offender-david-sanborn-kicks-the-pop-habit-6412009\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a foot wide<\/a> probably owns a piece of David Sanborn\u2019s unmistakable sound but doesn\u2019t know it,\u201d The Phoenix New Times, an Arizona newspaper, observed in a 1991 article about Mr. Sanborn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Sanborn was heard on landmark albums like the Eagles\u2019 debut and Stevie Wonder\u2019s \u201cTalking Book\u201d in 1972 and Bruce Springsteen\u2019s 1975 smash \u201cBorn to Run.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He had a memorable star turn on Mr. Bowie\u2019s \u201cYoung Americans\u201d (1975), on which his sunny yet sultry solo opens the memorable <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iO6OvHxD_m8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">title track<\/a>. \u201cThere was no lead guitar, so I played the role of lead guitar,\u201d he told DownBeat. \u201cI was all over that record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He also joined Mr. Bowie\u2019s tour for the album, part of a crack supporting outfit that also included Doug Rauch on bass and Greg Errico on drums. \u201cOn the \u2018Young Americans\u2019 tour,\u201d he recalled, \u201cBowie would sometimes let the band play for 20 minutes before he came on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">David William Sanborn was born on July 30, 1945, in Tampa, Fla., where his father was stationed in the Air Force. He grew up in Kirkwood, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His life took a fateful turn at 3 when he contracted polio, which ravaged his left arm, right leg and lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He was in an iron lung for a year, and he took up saxophone at 11 on the advice of a doctor, who thought learning a woodwind instrument would help him build respiratory strength.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The disease had lasting effects, some of them particularly challenging for a horn player. As an adult, Mr. Sanborn still suffered limited lung capacity, and his left arm was smaller than his right, with compromised dexterity on that hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t think of myself as a victim,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/135499\/saxophonists-personal-note\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he was quoted as saying<\/a> in 2005 by the Salt Lake City television station KSL. \u201cThis is my reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After studying music at Northwestern University and with the saxophonist J.R. Monterose at the University of Iowa, he headed to California and joined the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He was 24 when the band played before hundreds of thousands at the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h62W2ARtwU8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woodstock festival<\/a> in August 1969.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Sanborn went on to tour with Stevie Wonder in 1972 and released his first solo album, \u201cTaking Off,\u201d in 1975. He earned his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/david-sanborn\/14086\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first Grammy<\/a>, for best R&amp;B instrumental performance, for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iMazHVX4SaY\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAll I Need Is You,\u201d<\/a> a track on his 1981 album, \u201cVoyeur.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His 2008 album, \u201cHere &amp; Gone,\u201d featuring guest appearances by Eric Clapton, Derek Trucks and Joss Stone, was a tribute to Ray Charles and his arranger and saxophonist Hank Crawford, who was a major influence on Mr. Sanborn\u2019s playing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat music was everything to me,\u201d he told NPR. \u201cIt kind of combined jazz, gospel, and rhythm and blues. It wasn\u2019t any one of those things, but it was all of them kind of mixed together. And that, to me, is kind of the essence of American music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Information about survivors was not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Sanborn continued to tour into his 70s. With all the changes in the music business, he found, touring was a better way to make a living than recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou make a fraction of what you used to make,\u201d he said in a 2017 interview with The Tampa Bay Times. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of options.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He found life on the road increasingly taxing, but performing live remained a passion.
