{"id":29464,"date":"2024-05-18T08:08:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-18T12:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/france-issues-scratch-and-sniff-baguette-postage-stamps\/18\/05\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-05-18T08:08:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-18T12:08:10","slug":"france-issues-scratch-and-sniff-baguette-postage-stamps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/france-issues-scratch-and-sniff-baguette-postage-stamps\/18\/05\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"France Issues Scratch-and-Sniff Baguette Postage Stamps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joining the ranks of the screen goddess Brigitte Bardot and the Eiffel Tower, another French treasure is being celebrated with its own postage stamp: the baguette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And this one is scratch-and-sniff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The latest showcasing of French cultural heritage as Paris prepares to host millions of visitors for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the new stamp features a cartoon image of a baguette wrapped in a tricolor ribbon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was unveiled by France\u2019s postal service on Thursday \u2014 May 16, the feast day of Saint Honor\u00e9, the patron saint of bakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe baguette, the bread of our daily lives, the symbol of our gastronomy, the jewel of our culture,\u201d the usually not-flashy postal service <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laposte.fr\/pp\/timbre-baguette-de-pain-francaise\/p\/1124031\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raved in its description<\/a> of its new offering.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The stamp, which is intended to be used for international letters of up to 20 grams, or about 7 ounces, was released for sale at post offices and kiosks throughout the republic on Friday, with an initial print run of 594,000 and a price tag of 1.96 euros, or $2.14, each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Thanks to scratch-and-sniff technology, it will also transport \u201cbakery fragrances\u201d to those lucky enough to receive a letter from France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The baguette is one of the most talked-about breads in the world, and certainly the most popular in its native France: Six billion baguettes are made every year, according to the postal service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The culinary treat has also drawn international accolades, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/30\/world\/europe\/france-baguette-unesco.html#:~:text=It%20is%20the%20baguette%2C%20the,%E2%80%9Cintangible%20cultural%20heritage%E2%80%9D%20list.\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">being added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2022<\/a>. At the time, a gushing President Emmanuel Macron called the baguette \u2014 made with just four ingredients: flour, water, salt and yeast \u2014 \u201cthe spirit of French know-how.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And this month, bakers in Suresnes, a Paris suburb, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/06\/world\/europe\/worlds-longest-baguette-france.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">baked a 461-foot baguette<\/a> in front of judges from Guinness World Records, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/longest-baguette\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breaking a record held by Italy since 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Paris, the hottest competition is the annual <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/29\/world\/europe\/france-baguette.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cGrand Prix de la baguette\u201d<\/a> during which hundreds of baguettes compete to be called the city\u2019s best.
