{"id":29925,"date":"2024-05-23T14:25:02","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T18:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/i-couldnt-bury-my-brother-because-of-sudan-bombing\/23\/05\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-05-23T14:25:02","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T18:25:02","slug":"i-couldnt-bury-my-brother-because-of-sudan-bombing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/i-couldnt-bury-my-brother-because-of-sudan-bombing\/23\/05\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"I couldn&#8217;t bury my brother because of Sudan bombing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Fierce fighting in Sudan&#8217;s besieged city of El Fasher has become so intense that Mohamed Haroon Abdallah has been unable to bury his brother.<\/p>\n<p>He was injured last week in an attack on the city in the western region of Darfur and died on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had to abandon my brother&#8217;s body on my way to the cemetery,&#8221; Mr Abdallah, 30, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>New satellite images show the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is battling to wrest control of the city from the army, has been deliberately targeting the Ab Shouk camp, where Mr Abdallah and an estimated 100,000 others live having fled an earlier ethnic conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The rival military factions have been fighting each other nationwide since April 2023 &#8211; and in Darfur the violence has recalled the ethnic cleansing unleashed by Arab militias on non-Arab communities two decades ago.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 487px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/61n.ZWKlLFtL6w3ihYea6w--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTE3MzI7aD05NzQ-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/9ad8ab10be68a10fb66ebbd1acf80931\"><span class=\"caas-img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Abou Shouk camp in El Fasher\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/AO.7WqLSTqb7fMJb.5K3Aw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA--\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/9ad8ab10be68a10fb66ebbd1acf80931\" class=\"caas-img\"\/><button class=\"link caas-lightbox\" aria-label=\"View larger image\" data-ylk=\"sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;elm:expand;itc:1\"><span class=\"openArrows icon\"><svg width=\"22\" height=\"22\" viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\"><path d=\"M12.372 0.92C12.372 0.414 12.782 0.004 13.287 0.004L21 0L20.996 7.712C20.996 8.217 20.586 8.628 20.08 8.628C19.574 8.628 19.164 8.217 19.164 7.712V3.183L12.337 10.011L10.988 8.663L17.816 1.835H13.287C12.782 1.835 12.372 1.425 12.372 0.92ZM1.835 17.816L8.663 10.988L10.012 12.337L3.183 19.164H7.712C8.218 19.164 8.627 19.574 8.627 20.08C8.627 20.586 8.218 20.995 7.712 20.995L0 21L0.004 13.287C0.004 12.782 0.414 12.372 0.92 12.372C1.425 12.372 1.835 12.782 1.835 13.287V17.816Z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">Abou Shouk camp is one of the areas that have recently been targeted [Abdulhafeez al Ghali]<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The satellite images analysed by Yale University&#8217;s Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) show how the RSF is targeting civilian dwellings in and around El Fasher, the army\u2019s last stronghold in Darfur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is clear evidence of intentional burning of civilian structures and bombardment,\u201d Nathaniel Redmond, director of the lab, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt present approximately 100 football pitches-worth of civilian dwellings have been destroyed in the past two weeks of the fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He warned that having been under siege since mid-April, the army was now struggling to get supplies and the final battle was likely to be \u201ca genocidal bloodbath\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UN special adviser on the genocide prevention has said the risk of genocide is growing every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Darfur and El Fasher, civilians are being attacked and killed because of the colour of their skin, because of their ethnicity,\u201d Alice Wairimu Nderitu <a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2024\/sc15702.doc.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told the UN Security Council on Tuesday;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told the UN Security Council on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The army has also been accused of indiscriminate shelling and aerial bombing in densely populated areas.<\/p>\n<p>El Fasher resident Ibrahim al-Tayeb al-Faki said his sister was killed in a military airstrike that had also destroyed his home.<\/p>\n<p>The 47-year-old told the BBC he had sent his three children to live with their grandfather but his house was also hit. The family is now sheltering in its ruins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no safe place in El Fasher right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Medical charity M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) said staff at a hospital it operated in the city were struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<p>Since the fighting began in the city on Friday 10 May, 809 casualties had arrived at South Hospital and 93 had died, MSF said.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital had only one surgeon and more than 70 people were waiting for operations, MSF\u2019s Claire Nicolet told the BBC, warning that medical supplies would soon run out.<\/p>\n<p>The situation is no different at Saudi Hospital, run by the Ministry of Health, which has been partially damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Its medical director Modther Ibrahim Suliman told the BBC that the water and solar systems had been destroyed and they were operating under \u201cvery difficult\u201d conditions.<\/p>\n<p>El Fasher residents say that access to food and water has become increasingly difficult. The RSF has been attacking the city from three sides and blocked all supply routes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Survival is incredibly challenging,&#8221; 32-year-old lawyer Mahmoud Ahmed Adam, who has had to move repeatedly to escape the fighting, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many people are living in schools and refugee centres that lack basic services or aid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abdallah, who lost his brother, said Ab Shouk camp\u2019s Al Saalam School was now doubling as a shelter for those who had recently lost their homes.<\/p>\n<p>It had also been shelled this week, resulting in a young girl losing her leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is currently receiving first aid at the camp\u2019s clinic as there is no means to take her to South Hospital,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The
