The unemployed former football player from Missouri was about to run out of money following a three-week boys\u2019 trip when he got a call that would change his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy severance ended that weekend,\u201d Mr. Wilson, 27, recalled. \u201cI came home and it was like the most depressing Monday of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wilson decided to check his voice mail to see if there was something \u2014 anything \u2014 in there to cheer him up. To his shock, a Bravo producer had left a message. She was interested in possibly casting him on Season 8 of \u201cSummer House,\u201d an unscripted show that follows the lives of a group of New York media workers, influencers and entrepreneurs who share a house in the Hamptons \u2014 the last few seasons have been filmed at a mansion in Water Mill \u2014 each summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though he had never seen \u201cSummer House\u201d<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>and<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>wasn\u2019t a fan of reality TV (except for the occasional \u201cBachelor\u201d binge), Mr. Wilson had an intuition that it might be right for him. \u201cI just had something in me that was like, just see what this is and call back,\u201d he said. He had recently met a \u201cSummer House\u201d cast member named Lindsay Hubbard at the bar of Lamia\u2019s Fish Market in the East Village. Mr. Wilson was so unprepared to be cast that he didn\u2019t initially make the connection between having met Ms. Hubbard and receiving the call from Bravo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh I actually know someone on that show\u2019 and they were like, \u2018That\u2019s how we found you, you idiot,\u2019\u201d Mr. Wilson said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-76d79231\">The Reluctant Star<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the last few years, producers had experimented with adding new male cast members to \u201cSummer House,\u201d but nobody seemed to fit with the main cast enough to stick around for more than a season or two. Affable and self-aware, Mr. Wilson was not an obvious choice for a show that thrives on drama. Yet over the course of this season, the finale of which will air on Bravo on May 30, Mr. Wilson has become a social media darling, almost universally beloved by both his housemates and the audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the comedian, actor and Bravo fan Joel Kim Booster <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ihatejoelkim\/status\/1781794723461578862?s=46&amp;t=mLFwzVDo265_x6zKv_fuLg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put<\/a> it: \u201cHaven\u2019t liked a straight white guy this much since friggin Bernie Sanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Mr. Booster, who has been watching \u201cSummer House\u201d since the beginning, Mr. Wilson has pulled off a kind of magic trick. \u201cObviously, we know he likes attention, because he has signed up to do this show \u2014 but somehow his performance on the show has convinced me that he actually doesn\u2019t,\u201d Mr. Booster said in an interview. \u201cUnlike all of the other narcissists that he is surrounded by, he is the exception to the rule, he is the one being sort of genuine and real.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In March, Courtney Frain and Mary Mahoney, the co-hosts of the popular reality TV podcast \u201cTwo Judgey Girls,\u201d ran an online contest in which listeners could vote for the hottest man on Bravo, which they cheekily called \u201cMarch Manness.\u201d Despite the fact that he hadn\u2019t even appeared on a full season of a Bravo show yet, Mr. Wilson won second place. (The winner, Craig Conover, is the longtime star of \u201cSouthern Charm\u201d<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>and the boyfriend of another \u201cSummer House\u201d<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>cast member, Paige DeSorbo.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s something about him that\u2019s infectious,\u201d said Ms. Frain, a fan who has also hung out with Mr. Wilson in person. \u201cYou feel like you\u2019ve known him forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Mahoney said what\u2019s refreshing about Mr. Wilson is that, unlike other men cast on Bravo, he doesn\u2019t seem to be hiding anything. \u201cHe\u2019s truly his authentic self,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wilson\u2019s castmates also took to him almost immediately. \u201cHe\u2019s a smart, funny, driven guy who enjoys providing comedic relief, but is also self-aware, owns his flaws and doesn\u2019t take himself too seriously,\u201d Kyle Cooke, 41, who\u2019s been on \u201cSummer House\u201d since it premiered in 2017, wrote in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWest is a one-of-a-kind special human,\u201d said Jesse Solomon, 30, another newcomer this season who quickly became close with Mr. Wilson. \u201cHe is one of the funniest and quick-witted guys I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Bravo stars and their fans are mercurial, as quick to put a new cast member on a pedestal as they are to tear them down. For now, Mr. Wilson is enjoying all of the adulation. But can he keep the good vibes going?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3ed36e62\">A Solid Foundation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Westling Conrad Wilson grew up in Columbia, Mo., with his younger brother, Henry, and parents, Elizabeth, an OB-GYN, and Bruce, a former world history teacher turned cattle rancher. (\u201cBut he votes Democratic,\u201d Mr. Wilson added.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After graduating from high school in 2013, Mr. Wilson attended Montana State University, where he played football and studied marketing. \u201cFrom the first time I met him, you could tell he was very, very comfortable in just about any setting, almost like a chameleon,\u201d said his former football coach Jeff Choate, who now works as the head football coach at the University of Nevada, Reno. \u201cHe thrives on other people\u2019s energy and really kind of draws people into him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Montana State, Mr. Wilson worked as a promoter at one of Bozeman\u2019s most popular local hangouts, the Rockin R Bar. \u201cHe\u2019d have free drink coupons, and he\u2019d just go around and put together promotions,\u201d Mr. Choate said. \u201cAnd so, you know, on a Friday or Saturday night, when it wasn\u2019t in season and they were having a good time at Rockin R, West was always kind of the ringleader.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After graduation, Mr. Wilson took a job as a social and video producer at Bleacher Report, a sports news website. He moved to Las Vegas to help launch the brand\u2019s sports betting operation, and worked from an office in Caesar\u2019s Palace. \u201cI\u2019m an optimist with locations, but living there was odd,\u201d Mr. Wilson said. \u201cI would drive in, park in the garage and then take the elevator with someone who was 60 years old dressed like a Spartan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bleacher Report agreed to transfer him to the New York office just as the pandemic hit. He spent a few months working remotely from his parents\u2019 house in Columbia before eventually moving to the city full-time in July 2020. Right before Christmas of 2022, Mr. Wilson was laid off from Bleacher Report. He received six months\u2019 severance, but was having a difficult time landing a new job in the shrinking journalism industry. He spent some time traveling (he\u2019s been to all 50 states), but cash reserves and time were running out. The Bravo role came at just the right time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the initial calls with Bravo, Mr. Wilson had a series of interviews and conversations with production, where he said he asked as many questions of the network as they did of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wilson was very clear that he would not agree to be typecast as \u201canother white guy who gets pigeonholed into being some douchey, fratty, dumb, racist Missouri guy,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause I know that I\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The producers agreed that he should just be himself, and with no other professional prospects on the horizon, he agreed to join the cast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy daughter was like, \u2018West is on \u2018Summer House\u2019! And I\u2019m like, what the hell is \u2018Summer House\u2019?<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u2019<\/em>\u201d Mr. Choate said. \u201cBut then I saw it and I\u2019m like, oh yeah, this makes total sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wilson is charismatic. His goofy personality \u2014 and stylish but casual wardrobe \u2014 make him seem like the leading man in an indie rom-com written by a woman (see: Clairo T-shirt, backward baseball hat, gold signet pinkie ring). He\u2019s handsome in an approachable way, which is perhaps why Bravo fans have connected with him: He seems like a regular guy they too could date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As fans keep reminding him, he\u2019s also not the typical tall, lean, dark and handsome guy you usually see on TV. Mr. Wilson is 5-foot-11, but somehow appears shorter onscreen. (Mr. Solomon said that when the two first met, he thought, \u201cthis guy is way taller than he looks on Instagram.\u201d) He also has a broad football player\u2019s build, which has made him into an unwitting body positivity icon online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ve had a couple of guys DM me who claim to not be good looking or in shape and they\u2019re like, you know, \u2018I feel so seen by you,\u2019\u201d Mr. Wilson said, laughing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said he also has received messages from women saying that his popularity on the show proves that personality matters more than looks, a puzzling statement to make to a cornfed all-American jock with impeccable street style. Mr. Wilson always assumed he was at least \u201csort of handsome,\u201d but now he\u2019s wondering if it was always his sense of humor and easy confidence that landed him dates. He\u2019s trying to not let all of the social media comments go to his head \u2014 or hurt his feelings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf the overweight man felt seen by me, like if that\u2019s my role, then let\u2019s do it I guess,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m here for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Perhaps Mr. Wilson\u2019s most impressive feat on the show was almost immediately winning over the charmingly standoffish longtime female cast members, including Paige DeSorbo, Amanda Batula and Ciara Miller, a nurse and model whose budding romance with Mr. Wilson is one of this season\u2019s primary story lines. In the parasocial world of the Bravo universe, perhaps no other couple is being rooted for more enthusiastically than Mr. Wilson and Ms. Miller. (Mr. Wilson refused to comment on the current status of his relationship with Ms. Miller, as the show hadn\u2019t finished airing before the interview.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In August 2023, toward the end of filming Season 8, Mr. Wilson, who now lives in Hell\u2019s Kitchen, was hired as a sports video producer at Complex. He\u2019s brought his rising star status to that network\u2019s social media, recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6FiarArFkG\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interviewing<\/a> Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@westywilson\/video\/7359659807852285227?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posting<\/a> videos of his outfits in front of the Complex logo. Unlike most reality stars, he\u2019s not interested in giving up his day job to become a full-time influencer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m proud to lead with an actual career,\u201d Mr. Wilson said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to ever have to say, like, I\u2019m an influencer. That\u2019s my worst nightmare. I do care about actually contributing to something that\u2019s not just my own Instagram or TV,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With so much positive buzz around his first season, Bravo watchers are curious to see how Mr. Wilson handles all the attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI feel like the real question is: What will this summer be like for him?\u201d said Ms. Mahoney of \u201cTwo Judgey Girls.\u201d \u201cEveryone is rooting for him. And usually if you have a good first season, it goes to your head and you get an ego.
