{"id":30245,"date":"2024-05-28T07:55:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T11:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/post-falsely-claims-old-video-shows-nigerians-fleeing-kidnapping-gangs\/28\/05\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-05-28T07:55:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T11:55:10","slug":"post-falsely-claims-old-video-shows-nigerians-fleeing-kidnapping-gangs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/post-falsely-claims-old-video-shows-nigerians-fleeing-kidnapping-gangs\/28\/05\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Post falsely claims old video shows Nigerians fleeing kidnapping gangs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader portrait\" style=\"padding-bottom:136%\"><img alt=\"&lt;span&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=\" caption-wrapper=\"\" caption-aligned-with-image=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\"><span>A screenshot of the false claim, taken on May 23, 2024<\/span><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<p>Zurmi, mentioned in the claim, is a town in Zamfara state in northwest Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Zamfara state has been one of the hardest hit by the prolific kidnappings in Nigeria\u2019s north.<\/p>\n<p>Published by an opposition supporter called \u201cSerah Ibrahim\u201d, the post features a 30-second clip of people walking briskly over dusty ground.<\/p>\n<p>Other X accounts (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/HYZKk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/CQ22-CND6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>) repeated the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks before the allegation surfaced,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanguardngr.com\/2024\/04\/bandits-attack-palace-in-zamfara-emir-whisked-away\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:gunmen attacked the town;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">gunmen attacked the town<\/a> and attempted to kidnap its emir (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/6fpFG\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>). The assailants destroyed electricity and telecommunication facilities after their kidnapping attempt failed.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2023, international aid group M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org\/neglected-humanitarian-crisis-escalates-northwest-nigeria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:temporarily withdrew;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">temporarily withdrew<\/a> some of its staff from the town after fighting around the local hospital had escalated (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/3GG4-3TEJ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Two months earlier, the Nigerian military said about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2023\/10\/13\/nigeria-strikes-kill-bandits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:100 gunmen were killed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">100 gunmen were killed<\/a> in the state (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/RK3T-6JJT\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The gangs, notorious for mass kidnappings from schools and colleges in recent years, maintain camps hidden in a vast forest straddling Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Niger states.<\/p>\n<p>But the claim that the video showed people fleeing Zurmi after 500 people were kidnapped is false.<\/p>\n<h3>Burkina Faso<\/h3>\n<p>To verify the claim, AFP Fact Check took a screenshot of the misleading video and carried out a <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/how-do-reverse-image-search\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reverse image search;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reverse image search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We found that the video has been online since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Germany-based charity organisation SAIDA International shared a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=324561076017592\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:longer version of the clip;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">longer version of the clip<\/a> on its Facebook page on June 8, 2021 (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/RHM4-VGB6?type=image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The caption, written in German, explained that the footage showed \u201cthe people of Burkina Faso\u201d on the run \u201cin their own country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It also included the hashtag\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/watch\/hashtag\/solhan?__eep__=6%2F&amp;__tn__=*NK\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:#solhan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">#solhan<\/a>, which suggested that the video showed residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/UvKAKYe3JkPUfqMb7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Solhan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Solhan<\/a>, a town close to Burkina Faso\u2019s border with Niger and Mali.<\/p>\n<p>A Burkina Faso news outlet, Lobs Paalga, published another version of the video on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XT6CWTDGNrA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:YouTube channel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">YouTube channel<\/a> the same day as SAIDA (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/9TWH-BAY5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>). It said the clip showed \u201cinhabitants of Solhan\u201d fleeing their town.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"0d0109d4-85f2-5f1b-b21a-22fcccb16aa0\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XT6CWTDGNrA?si=sJ9O99-LIe7PVNEc\" scrolling=\"auto\"><p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vid\u00e9o d&#039;un exode attribu\u00e9 aux habitants de Solhan\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XT6CWTDGNrA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/wca\/press-releases\/following-armed-attack-solhan-unicef-provides-emergency-assistance-9000-displaced\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:130 people;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">130 people<\/a>, many of them children, were killed in the town on June 5, 2021, by a \u201cnon-state armed group\u201d (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/2PHD-F8MF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>) allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/africa\/20210629-children-killing-children-two-detained-over-burkina-faso-village-massacre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:comprising;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">comprising<\/a> children (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/U8EH-PTWB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>AFP covered the incident and put the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/thousands-of-women-and-children-flee-burkina-faso-massacre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:number of dead;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">number of dead<\/a> at more than 130 (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/GH5H-6WNF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>). It said at least 7,000 people fled Solhan after the bloodiest massacre in Burkina Faso\u2019s six-year-old jihadist insurgency at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The footage is repeatedly used to mislead the public about Nigeria\u2019s security challenges.
