He said the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels was part of a conspiracy that \u201ccould very well be what got President Trump elected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Steinglass, who had not yet finished his remarks at our publication time, wove a sweeping story of how Trump, with help from Michael Cohen, his former fixer, and the tabloid The National Enquirer, sought to bury negative news stories before the election. \u201cThis was overt election fraud,\u201d he said, \u201can act in furtherance of the conspiracy to promote Mr. Trump\u2019s election by unlawful means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier in the day, Todd Blanche, Trump\u2019s lawyer, spent hours attacking the credibility of Cohen, calling him \u201cthe G.L.O.A.T.,\u201d or the \u201cgreatest liar of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Blanche\u2019s calculus is simple: If the jurors do not believe Cohen, that may constitute reasonable doubt, which could make it impossible to convict his client. Blanche at one point called Cohen \u201cthe human embodiment of reasonable doubt, literally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As soon as Wednesday, the judge, Juan Merchan, will instruct jurors on the relevant law before they begin deliberations. The jury could take anywhere from hours to weeks to reach a verdict.
