She was 85.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her daughter, Racheli Sion-Sarid, said the cause was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan was the last surviving child of Mr. Dayan, who served as Israel\u2019s defense minister during the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973. With his distinctive black eyepatch \u2014 he had lost his left eye in combat fighting with the British in World War II \u2014 he was the unmistakable patriarch of a family dynasty that many in Israel have compared to the Kennedys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dayan\u2019s wife, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/15\/obituaries\/ruth-dayan-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ruth<\/a>, was the founder of the fashion house <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/maskit.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maskit<\/a>. Their son <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/03\/arts\/assi-dayan-israeli-actor-and-filmmaker-dies-at-68.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Assi<\/a> was an actor and filmmaker. Another son, Ehud, was a sculptor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan shot to literary stardom at age 20 with \u201cNew Face in the Mirror\u201d (1959), an autobiographical novel written in English about a young female soldier whose father is a military commander.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOne day my father came to the camp,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHe said he was passing and had decided to drop in. He would never have admitted that he had come to see me. His arrival was, of course, an event \u2014 an occasion for smart and often unnecessary salutes, for alert and curious eyes. Will he kiss her when he leaves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The novelist <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1970\/11\/23\/archives\/anzia-yezierska-wrote-on-ghetto-self-taught-author-dies-at-90-in.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anzia Yezierska<\/a>, writing in The New York Times Book Review, called \u201cNew Face in the Mirror\u201d \u201can extraordinary record of the inner life of a rebellious adolescent in search of self-realization.\u201d She added, \u201cThere is an honesty and a compulsive intensity in the telling of her story that haunts us, long after finishing the book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other books followed. In 1967, Ms. Dayan published two books: \u201cDeath Has Two Sons,\u201d a father-and-son novel set during the Holocaust, and \u201cIsrael Journal,\u201d a diary of her experiences during the Six-Day War under the command of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/12\/world\/middleeast\/ariel-sharon-fierce-defender-of-a-strong-israel-dies-at-85.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ariel Sharon<\/a>, who later became prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In prose that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/07\/27\/archives\/charles-poore-book-reviewer-for-the-times-till-69-dies-r-critic-for.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Charles Poore<\/a>, a book reviewer at The Times for nearly 40 years, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1967\/11\/02\/83154339.html?pageNumber=45\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">compared to Ernest Hemingway\u2019s<\/a>, Ms. Dayan wrote in \u201cIsrael Journal\u201d of how the war had changed her: \u201cNothing will be the same now. I have looked at cessation of life, destruction of matter, sorrow of destroyers, agony of the victorious, and it had to leave a mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan decided to try politics after her father <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1981\/10\/17\/obituaries\/moshe-dayan-66-dies-in-israel-hero-of-war-architect-of-peace.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">died<\/a> in 1981.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt never seemed right as long as he was still alive,\u201d she <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/lilith.org\/articles\/from-a-girl-in-khaki-to-a-woman-in-black\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the Jewish American magazine Lilith.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a member of the Labor Party, she served three terms in the Knesset. She was instrumental in passing legislation that outlawed sexual harassment. She also founded the Knesset Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality and backed measures protecting L.G.B.T.Q. individuals from discrimination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan was at times a divisive figure in Israeli politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1992, she outraged her party and its leader, Prime Minister <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/11\/05\/world\/assassination-israel-yitzhak-rabin-73-israeli-soldier-turned-prime-minister.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Yitzhak Rabin<\/a>, when she was photographed by a tabloid newspaper in a bikini on a Tel Aviv beach during Yom Kippur, the holiest holiday in the Jewish calendar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan, in turn, was outraged that her sunbathing had become a national scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIsn\u2019t a picture of a woman in a bathing suit off-limits for religious people?\u201d she said in an interview with the Hebrew-language newspaper Hadashot. \u201cWhy are they even looking at this picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her most contentious political act came the next year, when she became the first member of the Knesset to meet with the Palestinian leader <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/11\/11\/world\/middleeast\/yasir-arafat-father-and-leader-of-palestinian-nationalism.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Yasir Arafat<\/a>. She gave him a copy of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/11\/03\/books\/lover-and-loner.html?timespastHighlight=%E2%80%9CMy,Father,,His,Daughter%E2%80%9D\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cMy Father, His Daughter\u201d<\/a> (1985), a book about her father in which she wrote about his numerous extramarital affairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Arafat \u201chas a public appearance that is not very appealing,\u201d she told The Toronto Star after their meeting. \u201cBut that quickly disappears. He is a good listener. Very quick. Humorous and gentle. He was a very worried man when I saw him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She believed that the only solution to the Palestinian conflict was separate states \u2014 and she never wavered from that opinion. She opposed Jewish settlements in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is inconceivable that we should still have to discuss the Palestinian right to self-determination,\u201d she told The Star. \u201cWe are still doubting that they are people. This is so stupid, it is like an ostrich burying its head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yael Dayan was born on Feb. 12, 1939, in Nahalal, a farming community in what is now northern Israel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Considered a prodigy at an early age, she was reading by age 3. She skipped several grades in elementary school. She began writing \u201cNew Face in the Mirror\u201d when she was 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After serving as a captain in the public relations unit of the Israeli Defense Forces, she studied international relations at Hebrew University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan married Dov Sion, a colonel under Mr. Sharon\u2019s command during the Six-Day War, in 1967. He died in 2003. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Dan Sion, and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Dayan persevered in her advocacy for peace even when it put her in danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1996, while she was touring Hebron, the West Bank city that is home to hundreds of settlers, a Jewish extremist approached her with an offer of a cup of tea. Ms. Dayan accepted. According to The Jerusalem Post, the man flung the tea at her face.
