There are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/27\/arts\/pride-events-nyc.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dance parties, cultural events and unexpected gay histories<\/a> to have fun with too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But while boozy drag brunches and silent discos under the stars are fun and all, Pride can also happen onscreen and from the comfort of your couch. Tearful romances, family-friendly comedies, revelatory documentaries: Pride Month is a ripe time for discovering how the movies mirror queer lives as they were and still can be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In these seven films, Pride comes out in all its messy, sexy, lovely glory.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1e73f31c\">\u2018The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson\u2019 (2017)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80189623\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it on Netflix.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Murder or suicide? That\u2019s the heartbreaking question that fuels David France\u2019s documentary about Marsha P. Johnson, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NW5BIAKeGUg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trailblazing transgender activist<\/a>, performer and high-profile elder of the Stonewall uprising who was found dead in the Hudson River in 1992. Yet embedded among the investigative elements of the film is a treasure trove of archival footage of Johnson, described in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/obituaries\/overlooked-marsha-p-johnson.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a 2018 obituary<\/a> in The New York Times as \u201ca fixture of street life in Greenwich Village.\u201d To watch Johnson resiliently parade down Christopher Street during Pride, her beaming smile accentuated by her signature glossy lip, is to see a revolution in heels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The director <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bressanproject.wixsite.com\/website\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur J. Bressan Jr.<\/a> was an indie polyglot who made adult films and the under-the-radar 1985 AIDS drama <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=swFJjpiMTXA\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBuddies\u201d<\/a> (beautifully <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/31\/movies\/first-aids-movie-gay-drama-buddies.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">restored in 2018<\/a>). But Bressan, who died from the disease in 1987, also made this carefully observed documentary about Pride in New York and other cities. It\u2019s a fascinating, scrappy time capsule of queer life in post-Stonewall, pre-AIDS epidemic America that chronicles the revelry and protest that greeted the modern gay liberation movement. \u201cGay USA\u201d also features footage, taken by the activist <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5I_zom8XGik\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lilli Vincenz<\/a>, of New York\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyclgbtsites.org\/site\/starting-point-of-nycs-first-pride-march\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first gay pride parade<\/a>, in 1970, on what was then known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/27\/nyregion\/pride-parade-first-new-york-lgbtq.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Christopher Street Liberation Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5a013e52\">\u2018Before Stonewall\u2019 (1984)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/movies\/677407\/before-stonewall\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it on Tubi.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The first Pride parades were revolutionary. But for the generation of L.G.B.T.Q. people who came of age before the Stonewall riots in 1969, a parade was only the latest, if most visible, sign of public resistance and self-respect. The uncovering of that past is the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1985\/06\/27\/movies\/film-documentary-on-homosexuals.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">mission of this documentary<\/a>, directed with tenderness and urgency by Greta Schiller and Robert Rosenberg (and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonblade.com\/2019\/12\/12\/before-stonewall-and-boys-dont-cry-added-to-national-film-registry\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">selected<\/a> for the National Film Registry). The movie is chockablock with grainy footage of early Pride parades. But even more fascinating are the Mod-style drag queens, butch lesbian nuptials and other people and moments that show how queer life forged a future well before Pride officially took the parade route.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">New York City Pride makes a cameo in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/08\/04\/movies\/film-review-comic-side-of-sex-in-age-of-aids.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Paul Rudnick\u2019s snappy screen adaptation<\/a> of his hit 1993 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/01\/21\/theater\/review-theater-laughs-that-mask-the-fears-of-gay-manhattan.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Off Broadway play<\/a>, set in the uneasy years after the first panicked decade of the AIDS crisis. This sharp-tongued romantic comedy, directed by Christopher Ashley, is about a gay man (Steven Weber) whose plan to swear off sex grows complicated when he falls for an H.I.V.-positive muscle boy (Michael T. Weiss). The sunny, oh-so-\u201990s Pride scenes \u2014 did we really wear that much flannel? \u2014 were shot in Central Park and on the streets of Manhattan. They\u2019ll make you wistful for queer marching bands and boastful moms, thanks to Olympia Dukakis\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vz1MWTi13qA\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cheeky appearance<\/a> as the devoted mother of a transgender daughter.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-70b4f86e\">\u2018Milk\u2019 (2008)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justwatch.com\/us\/movie\/milk\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rent or buy it on most major platforms.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sean Penn <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9HFRjamyua0\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won an Academy Award<\/a> for his performance as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/topic\/person\/harvey-milk\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Harvey Milk<\/a>, the slain gay rights leader, in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/11\/26\/movies\/26milk.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Gus Van Sant\u2019s biopic<\/a> set in 1970s San Francisco. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bw5UwRasras\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In one memorable scene<\/a>, the firebrand Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, urges a Pride rally crowd to come out and \u201cbreak down the myths and destroy the lies and distortions\u201d perpetuated by homophobes. The Hollywood treatment is rousing, but it\u2019s also worth checking out footage of Milk himself from the UCLA Film &amp; Television Archive. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LkEi6zlgtz8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A clip of Milk<\/a> speaking at the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade, just months before he was shot to death in 1978, is a glorious snapshot of how his fiery charisma lit a match under a movement.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-5b005e27\">\u2018Pride\u2019 (2014)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pluto.tv\/us\/on-demand\/movies\/63e59e1b90b2250013c8fae8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it on Pluto TV.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gay Pride marches bookend this rousing feel-good dramedy, directed by Matthew Warchus, about the uneasy alliance between mineworkers and gay and lesbian activists during a labor strike in the mid-\u201980s that rattled Britain under the conservative government of Margaret Thatcher. Many of the characters are based on people from the L.G.B.T.Q. and labor communities who marched together despite often violent opposition. Writing in The New York Times, Stephen Holden <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/26\/movies\/pride-shows-the-alliance-of-a-gay-group-and-mineworkers.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">called \u201cPride\u201d<\/a> \u201ca stirring film\u201d that\u2019s accentuated by \u201cthe kind of hearty, blunt-force drama with softened edges that leaves audiences applauding and teary-eyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-3f4c05cb\">\u2018BPM (Beats Per Minute)\u2019 (2017)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/movies\/599586\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stream it on Tubi.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The smiles: that\u2019s what lifts a parade scene in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/19\/movies\/bpm-beats-per-minute-review-aids-activism.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robin Campillo\u2019s stirring drama<\/a> about the Paris chapter of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/04\/13\/t-magazine\/act-up-aids.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the AIDS activist group<\/a> Act Up. Beyond a biography, the film is a remembrance of how L.G.B.T.Q. people found ways to love and celebrate despite death, despair and other bleak markers of a plague. In a joyous montage, beaming men bounce about in pink cheerleader skirts, waving pink pompoms. Yet they\u2019re also wearing Act Up\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/collections\/search\/object\/nmah_1813812\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signature black T-shirts<\/a> featuring pink triangles (the Nazi emblem identifying gays that was reclaimed as a pride symbol) and the urgent precept <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u201c<\/em>silence = mort<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u201d<\/em> (\u201csilence = death\u201d).
