She was 96 \u2014 the same age as the monarch when she <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/08\/world\/europe\/queen-elizabeth-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">died<\/a> two years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMum was a real character and a force of nature,\u201d her daughter, Carol Christophi, said in announcing Mrs. Charles\u2019s death, in a hospice. \u201cShe had an amazing life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mrs. Charles first acted in small repertory roles in regional theater. But her uncanny resemblance to the queen distracted audiences, who giggled and guffawed when she appeared onstage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That led to her playing the queen professionally \u2014 and for laughs \u2014 launching her on a career that lasted decades (until she retired in 2014 because of arthritis), if not quite as long as Elizabeth\u2019s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She played the queen in films like \u201cThe Naked Gun,\u201d \u201cNational Lampoon\u2019s European Vacation\u201d and \u201cAustin Powers in Goldmember.\u201d She appeared in character everywhere from an episode of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d to supermarket openings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mrs. Charles didn\u2019t cravenly capitalize on her resemblance (she was two inches shorter than the queen), although she did take elocution lessons and learn to mimic the queen\u2019s mannerisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe best piece of advice I got was that when I was facing an audience, I should look over them, not at them,\u201d she told The Daily Express in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mrs. Charles was, her daughter said, \u201calways respectful of the queen and adored the royal family,\u201d which is why she rejected roles that she considered risqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was offered a sketch by Sacha Baron Cohen,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreelibrary.com\/Our+interview+with+THE+QUEEN%3B+Famous+lookalike+Jeanette+Charles%2C+84%2C...-a0291717073\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she once said<\/a>. \u201cI won\u2019t say what it was, but he wanted me to do something so offensive that I turned it down.\u201d (She did disclose later, without elaborating, that Mr. Baron Cohen, as the character Ali G, had \u201casked me to drop my knickers as I got into a limousine.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LytRhIc1IDw\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Naked Gun\u201d<\/a> (1988), she allowed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/29\/nyregion\/29nielsen.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Leslie Nielsen<\/a>, playing the bungling detective Frank Drebin, to send her skidding across a table to thwart what he suspected was an attempted assassination. Drebin\u2019s boss, played by George Kennedy, consoled him about the resulting press coverage: \u201cWhat is journalism coming to? You\u2019re laying on top of the queen with her legs wrapped around you, and they call that news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her career included invitations from foreign protocol officers to rehearse proper greetings before state visits by the real queen. And once, while performing a sketch for the British television show \u201cThe Goodies\u201d in a lake near London, wearing a gown and tiara over a wet suit, she nearly drowned \u2014 she had forgotten to tell the director that she couldn\u2019t swim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Otherwise, her life was fairly mundane. Except, perhaps, for the fact that when fish died in her pond, she had a knack of administering the kiss of life and resuscitating them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jeannette Dorothea Louise Clark was born on Oct. 15, 1927, 18 months after Princess Elizabeth, in London. Her father, Alfred, was a soldier and cook who was personal chef to Field Marshal Harold Alexander, at one time the governor general of Canada, and who later became a restaurateur; her mother, Yetta (Wonsoff) Clark, was a Dutch immigrant from Poland.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After high school, Jeannette worked as a typist and a waitress in her father\u2019s restaurant. She had turned down a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art because her parents refused to pay the rest of the freight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While working as an au pair in Texas, she met another English expatriate, Ken Charles, an engineer with British Petroleum. They married in 1957 and lived in Libya for a while until Muammar el-Qaddafi staged a coup in 1969. They had three children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Charles died in 1997. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two sons, David and Peter, and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1972, Mrs. Charles commissioned a portrait of herself as a birthday gift for her husband. It was shown briefly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and stunned visitors, who assumed the woman in the painting was Elizabeth, until it was disqualified and removed: Paintings in the show were supposed to be based on real life, and Buckingham Palace informed organizers of the exhibition that the queen had not posed for this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the resulting publicity enabled Mrs. Charles to make a living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey certainly never could have imagined the career that the portrait would lead to,\u201d her daughter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mrs. Charles never met the queen, but, she wrote in her autobiography, \u201cThe Queen and I\u201d (1986), they once gaped at each other through the window of the monarch\u2019s Rolls-Royce.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The queen \u201cfroze, staring, hand immobile in the air as our eyes met from a distance of a couple of feet,\u201d Mrs. Charles wrote. \u201cWhen you see your doppelg\u00e4nger, the effect is cataclysmic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was so respectful of the monarchy that once, when she was invited to a banquet for a charity of which the Queen Mother was a patron, she asked the organizer of the affair to ask the royal family\u2019s approval.
