She pauses briefly, and then continues: \u201cDon\u2019t come. Cancel everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The video, which was uploaded in November, now has more than 700,000 views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The creator, Miranda Starcevic, is a 31-year-old French American who lives in Paris. She usually records herself speaking French, but thought a message about the Olympics would reach more people if it were in English.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And Ms. Starcevic wanted her viewers to know that from her perspective, of French citizens who \u201care kind of middle class,\u201d as she put it: \u201cNobody wants the Olympic Games. It\u2019s just a hot mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a visual-first international platform with many young users, TikTok is full of Olympics content. But in addition to the feel-good windows into athletes\u2019 lives and promotional videos from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@paris2024officiel?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">organizers<\/a> and sponsors, there are also unfiltered clips from residents of Paris warning potential visitors that the city may not deliver its best during the Games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A 24-year-old Parisian student whose display name is Leo Nora has posted several short clips about the Paris Games, stating they will be \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@leo_is_trying\/video\/7336299354220760352?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dangerous<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@leo_is_trying\/video\/7330722388302171424?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hell on Earth<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In one of her videos, she says into the camera, \u201cIf you are planning on coming to Paris for the Olympic Games, why? <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@leo_is_trying\/video\/7307279114648440097?_r=1&amp;_t=8n5VfPKC7Ek\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Do not come<\/a>. Do not come!\u201d The clip has been viewed more than a million times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived in Paris my whole life,\u201d Leo Nora said in an interview. \u201cI\u2019ve been to really big events in Paris. What prompted me to talk about it is I know how it can go right \u2014 and how it can go wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She and Ms. Starcevic had similar reasons for encouraging people to avoid the Games. Both said they were unhappy that the city asked <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/campus\/article\/2024\/05\/05\/paris-2024-students-left-unsure-of-their-fate-after-agency-requisitions-accommodation-for-olympic-games_6670493_11.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">students to give up their student housing<\/a> so the accommodations could be used for workers during the Games. And both expressed frustration and fears around transportation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Organizers and government officials are concerned about strikes by transportation workers during the Games, as well as more serious issues like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/27\/world\/europe\/paris-olympics-2024-security-opening-ceremony.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">terrorism<\/a>. Some creators have posted about Paris\u2019s pervasive <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jordentually\/video\/7348049594447711490\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tourist<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jamienyq\/video\/7355200318583393568\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scams<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@americanfille\/video\/7154051955298454790\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pickpockets<\/a> and recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6Ji3Z3tp6x\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hotel price hikes<\/a>. People on TikTok also warned htat there could be severe overcrowding on trains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not rare to have people fainting\u201d in the Metro,\u201d Leo Nora said. When someone faints, \u201cthe line stops, which causes delays,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tessa Bicard, an executive at a cosmetics company whose TikTok handle is Madame Tartempion, posted a video titled \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madame.tartempion\/video\/7345213584948858144?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Olympics are going to be a nightmare for Paris.<\/a>\u201d It has drawn more than 750,000 views and hundreds of comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Bicard, who is originally from Northern California and has lived in Paris for over 12 years, said in an interview that she was actually a big fan of the Olympics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have watched them every year since I was a kid,\u201d she said. \u201cI really like the swimming \u2014 and women\u2019s gymnastics, of course.\u201d But, she said, \u201cThis is the least excited I\u2019ve ever been about the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mainly, she said, that is because she doesn\u2019t have tickets. \u201cThey are too expensive or impossible to get,\u201d she said. She also stressed that all the different construction projects for the Games have already made daily life difficult. The expected influx of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/independent-study-reveals-olympic-games-paris-2024-economically-beneficial-for-host-region\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">millions of Olympic visitors<\/a>, she fears, will just make things worse. \u201cMy bus route has been complete chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As an American living in Paris, Ms. Bicard said that she often used her TikTok account to answer questions about the city, in addition to fun tips like \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madame.tartempion\/video\/7371025070325566753?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to spot an American in Paris<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Americans ask: \u201cWhere\u2019s the best place to say? What\u2019s the best neighborhood? Do you have a favorite restaurant? All that kind of stuff,\u201d she said. She replies to as many people as she can. \u201cThere\u2019s a certain aspect of \u2018I feel like I can trust you because you speak with an American accent,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When it comes to the Games, Ms. Bicard\u2019s view is a bit softer than that of more vocal Olympic naysayers like Leo Nora and Ms. Starcevic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to be here for the Olympics, hopefully this is not your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Paris,\u201d she said, adding that she expects it to be logistically challenging. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be really tricky and not at all pleasant to try to do some of those \u2018Paris\u2019 things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And like Ms. Starcevic and Leo Nora \u2014 and most Paris residents \u2014 Ms. Bicard said that she was expecting the Metro to be \u201ca total mess\u201d when the Games start. Already, she said, there are posters and billboards around the city, encouraging residents to anticipate the Games. Many see it as \u201ccoded language\u201d hinting at what many people are already thinking: \u201cLeave the city if you can \u2014 or if you can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Leo Nora, who usually posts about feminist and racial issues on TikTok, does not plan to be in Paris during the Games; her boyfriend lives outside the city, and she\u2019ll stay with him. \u201cI get anxious in crowds,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be the person who faints and ruins it for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Starcevic, who owns a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirandabanana.fr\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sustainable online fashion brand<\/a>, booked tickets months ago to spend a few days with a friend in Biarritz and a few days in the south of France, in order to be out of the city during the Games. \u201cI\u2019m lucky enough to be able to go,\u201d she said, \u201cBut most people don\u2019t have my privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Bicard, though, says she will stay. She plans to bike or walk to work instead of taking the M\u00e9tro. And she\u2019s expecting one of two things to happen, she said. \u201cEither it\u2019s going to be an absolute chaotic mess,\u201d she said, or surprisingly calm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Either way, she shrugged: \u201cParis is my home.
