He was 83.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His death was confirmed by his daughter Sammie Zambon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the many stars who lent their voices to Mr. James\u2019s catalog of songs over the years were Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His career of powerhouse hits began in 1968 when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/30\/obituaries\/bj-thomas-dead.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the country and pop hitmaker B.J. Thomas<\/a>, a lifelong friend, recorded \u201cThe Eyes of a New York Woman,\u201d which reached the Billboard Top 40. Mr. Thomas followed it with another song by Mr. James, \u201cHooked on a Feeling,\u201d a celebration of newfound love that hit No. 5 that year. It did even better in 1974, when the Swedish rock band Blue Swede\u2019s version reached No. 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. James catapulted into a different stratosphere in 1969 when Elvis Presley cut \u201cSuspicious Minds,\u201d a song Mr. James himself had recorded and released <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/story-behind-the-song\/2017\/09\/28\/how-suspicious-minds-found-its-way-elvis-presley\/705723001\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as a single, to little notice, the previous year<\/a>. Presley\u2019s version became one of his biggest hits, reaching No. 1 in 27 countries. It was his last No. 1 single.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSuspicious Minds\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-151127\/ramones-blitzkrieg-bop-42336\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was twice included on Rolling Stone\u2019s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time<\/a> \u2014 at No. 91 in 2004 and No. 70 in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAlways on My Mind,\u201d which Mr. James wrote with Wayne Carson and Johnny Christopher, became one of his most celebrated works. Brenda Lee recorded the first version, in 1972; Presley released his take in 1973; and John Wesley Ryles had a Top 20 country hit with his version in 1979, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/texassongwriters.com\/inductee\/mark-james\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the best-known version of \u201cAlways on My Mind\u201d was Willie Nelson\u2019s, released in 1982. It earned Mr. James and his collaborators the Grammy for song of the year and best country song, and it was also named song of the year by the Country Music Association. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/awards\/hall-of-fame-award\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The record was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. James\u2019s songs have also been recorded by Michael Bubl\u00e9, Jay-Z, the Pet Shop Boys, Bill Withers, Fine Young Cannibals and others. They have been featured in the films \u201cReservoir Dogs\u201d and \u201cLilo &amp; Stich\u201d and in the \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. James was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 1999, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmi.com\/news\/entry\/19991214_bmi_announces_top_100_songs_of_the_century\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broadcast Music Inc., the music rights management company,<\/a> included \u201cHooked on a Feeling,\u201d \u201cSuspicious Minds\u201d and \u201cAlways on My Mind\u201d on its list of the 100 greatest songs of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. James was born Francis Rodney Zambon on Nov. 29, 1940, in Houston. (The Houston Chronicle <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/entertainment\/music\/article\/mark-james-elvis-presley-19508845.php?utm_campaign=CMS%20Sharing%20Tools%20(Premium)&amp;utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=referral\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that he used the name Mark James because, when he began performing, club owners in Houston \u201cdidn\u2019t like the sound of Francis Zambon.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to his daughter Sammie, his survivors include his wife, Karen Zambon; another daughter, Dana Zambon; a brother, Rollin; and two grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Elvis Presley recorded five songs by Mr. James in all. They were the title tracks of two of his albums, \u201cRaised on Rock\u201d and \u201cMoody Blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/story-behind-the-song\/2017\/09\/28\/how-suspicious-minds-found-its-way-elvis-presley\/705723001\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview with The Tennessean<\/a>, Mr. James recalled the moment when Presley was booked for a studio in Memphis and he realized that \u201cSuspicious Minds\u201d would be perfect for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI turned around in the chair and it was like seeing a golden number one and I knew that was the song I\u2019d been looking for,\u201d he said. He felt, he added, like \u201cshaking Elvis and saying, \u2018This is a great one for you, man, to record.\u2019 But I knew probably everyone in the world had probably said that to him.
