{"id":31707,"date":"2024-06-18T21:42:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T01:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/religious-and-cultural-mentions-removed-from-names-of-chinas-xinjiang-villages-rights-groups-say\/18\/06\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-06-18T21:42:41","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T01:42:41","slug":"religious-and-cultural-mentions-removed-from-names-of-chinas-xinjiang-villages-rights-groups-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/religious-and-cultural-mentions-removed-from-names-of-chinas-xinjiang-villages-rights-groups-say\/18\/06\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious and cultural mentions removed from names of China&#8217;s Xinjiang villages, rights groups say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) \u2014 Authorities in China\u2019s western Xinjiang region have been systematically replacing the names of villages inhabited by Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities to reflect the ruling Communist Party\u2019s ideology, as part of an attack on their cultural identity, a report released by Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>About 630 villages in Xinjiang have had their names changed to remove references to Islam or the Uyghurs\u2019 culture and history, according to the group&#8217;s report, done in collaboration with the Norway-based organization Uyghur Hjelp.<\/p>\n<p>The report compared the names of 25,000 Xinjiang villages as listed by the National Bureau of Statistics of China between 2009 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Words like \u201cdutar,\u201d a traditional Uyghur string instrument, or \u201cmazar,\u201d a shrine, have been removed from the names of villages, and replaced with words such as \u201chappiness,\u201d \u201cunity\u201d and \u201charmony\u201d \u2014 generic terms often found in the Communist Party\u2019s policy documents.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Foreign Ministry didn\u2019t immediately respond to faxed questions about the report and its policies in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>Xinjiang is a vast region bordering Kazakhstan that is home to about 11 million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities. In 2017, the Chinese government launched a campaign of assimilation that has included <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-religion-china-only-on-ap-f89c20645e69208a416c64d229c072de\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mass detentions;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">mass detentions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/1ec5143fe4764a1d8ea73ce4a3e2c570\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:alleged political indoctrination;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">alleged political indoctrination<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/international-news-crime-china-clamps-down-china-ap-top-news-903a97b7c62a47b98553b6f422827dd7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:alleged family separations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">alleged family separations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/senate-china-forced-labor-automakers-96ea10d014cb2c2ed7efa208b1f1d1f1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:alleged forced labor;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">alleged forced labor<\/a> among other methods.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the crackdown, more than 1 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and other ethnic minorities were estimated to be held in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-beijing-ap-top-news-international-news-asia-pacific-890b79866c9eb1451ddf67b121272ee2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:extralegal internment camps;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">extralegal internment camps<\/a>. The Chinese government at the time described the camps as &#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/27f00e4feaa2755f25ab514cecda7add\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:vocational training centers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">vocational training centers<\/a> &#8221; and said they were necessary to curb separatism and religious extremism.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N.
