{"id":31956,"date":"2024-06-21T21:50:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-22T01:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/kendrick-lamars-drake-victory-lap-unites-los-angeles\/21\/06\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-06-21T21:50:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-22T01:50:44","slug":"kendrick-lamars-drake-victory-lap-unites-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/kendrick-lamars-drake-victory-lap-unites-los-angeles\/21\/06\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Kendrick Lamar\u2019s Drake Victory Lap Unites Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kendrick Lamar\u2019s sold-out homecoming at the Kia Forum, an arena just outside Los Angeles, promised pyrotechnics with its name alone: \u201cThe Pop Out: Ken &amp; Friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The \u201cPop Out\u201d ensured drama \u2014 it\u2019s from a line in Lamar\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T6eK-2OQtew\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNot Like Us,\u201d<\/a> his recent No. 1 song, and a scathing salvo in his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/06\/arts\/music\/kendrick-lamar-drake-explainer.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">war of words with Drake<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The \u201c&amp; Friends\u201d guaranteed surprise appearances from high-profile names: ultimately Dr. Dre, YG, Tyler, the Creator, Roddy Rich, Schoolboy Q and Steve Lacy, among many others. The whole thing would go down on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/juneteenth-day-celebration.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Juneteenth<\/a>, the annual celebration of Black emancipation in America, after a battle in which Lamar questioned Drake\u2019s status within the Black community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lamar, the most celebrated rapper of a generation, had <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/15\/arts\/music\/kendrick-drake-zendaya-popcast-deluxe.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unofficially won<\/a> the most high-profile hip-hop diss war in 20 years. Fans who came in person (the event was also streamed on Amazon Music) arrived anticipating a victory lap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lamar\u2019s official merch booths offered T-shirts that referenced the Drake beef, but many fans opted to bring their own, far more pointed homemade versions. Using an app, Nicole Flemate from Reedley, Calif., pasted Drake\u2019s face onto a box of a drug used for weight loss that Lamar accused him of using. \u201cI took the little nice lady out and threw Drake on there. I looked for the worst picture of Drake,\u201d she said, all laughs and smiles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The symbolism of the show being held on Juneteenth was not lost on the crowd, many clad in colorful shirts that celebrated the holiday. Ayeshia Garrett and her husband, Jamaal, who made the trip from Chicago, both wore Juneteenth attire. \u201cEverything Kendrick does has significance,\u201d she said. \u201cHe wants us to think deeply, beyond the art. He\u2019s trying to educate us.\u201d She added, \u201cWe have to show up and let Kendrick know we know what this is about.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Irene Kirkland from Pasadena, Calif., found significance in how a line from the battle connected to the holiday. \u201cI remember Drake was saying, \u2018Oh you rap like you trying to free some slaves.\u2019 And then Kendrick comes back <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">on<\/em> Juneteenth \u2014 <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">the day that we were freed<\/em> \u2014 and then pops out with a Juneteenth concert. How epic is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The all-star lineup poured out during DJ Mustard\u2019s opening set. The crowd screamed for Tyler, jumped for Roddy Ricch and both screamed and jumped for YG. Before Lamar emerged, the crowd began to chant a vulgar taunt aimed at Drake that plays off the name of his OVO record label.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cKendrick stood on business the whole time, for real. He didn\u2019t lie in anything that he said,\u201d the San Diego engineering student Adrian Vargas said. \u201cAnd Drake just did a whole lot of denying. Saying that he doesn\u2019t want to do this anymore, saying I don\u2019t want to beef anymore. Kendrick kind of solidified his spot as the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Within a set packed with hits, Lamar performed three of his five Drake diss tracks, opening with \u201cEuphoria\u201d and adding additional lines referencing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/rb-hip-hop\/drake-bought-tupac-shakur-crown-ring-1235381173\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drake\u2019s purchase<\/a> of a ring that previously belonged to Tupac Shakur. He punctuated the slight by covering Shakur\u2019s 1995 No. 1 \u201cCalifornia Love\u201d later in the set alongside Dr. Dre, who produced it. Members of the crowd rapped along to his incredibly wordy tracks aimed at his foe, sometimes pairing off and shouting the songs in their friends\u2019 faces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lamar closed the show by performing \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d over and over again, the crowd erupting like a powder keg for the first four of the five run-throughs. After the fifth and final version, a small, informal cypher of fans emerged. Jonny Williams, who flew in from Dover, Del., was part of the group rapping it a sixth time as the instrumental played and the crowd filed out. \u201cHe could keep playing\u201d the song, he said. \u201cHonestly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The beef, however, was only half the story. Gathering many of his guests onstage for a group photo, Lamar reminded the crowd that the event was also about something larger: \u201cUnity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt ain\u2019t got nothing to do with no back-and-forth records, it\u2019s got everything to do with this moment right here,\u201d he announced, underscoring how different factions of the Los Angeles rap world had showed up.
