Vocational schools in China are not known for academic rigor, and of the thousands of participants, Jiang Ping was the only one who came from a vocational school, state media reported.<\/p>\n<p>Jiang finished 12th in the latest qualifying round of the Alibaba Global Math Competition, a well-known, highly-competitive math contest, and secured her slot among the 801 global finalists for the final eight-hour test on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The qualifying round ended last Saturday, lasting 48 hours and was conducted online with multiple choice and essay length questions.<\/p>\n<p>No A.I. teams qualified for the finals, the organizers said in a post on Chinese social media platform <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/MpKvFTpEFgIsA_cC72qnnQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Weixin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Weixin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jiang\u2019s underdog win has spawned ardent supporters. A hashtag about her had gathered 17 million views as of Saturday. \u201cIn a life not defined by others, anyone can be a dark horse,\u201d read the hashtag in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>The contest includes questions on applied mathematics, probability and algebra.<\/p>\n<p>Jiang, a fashion design student from the Jiangsu Province in eastern China, and her performance had impressed multiple Chinese universities who took to social media to congratulate her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKudos to Jiang Ping! Anyone who has a dream is amazing!\u201d Zhejiang University, a prestigious school in eastern China wrote in a <a href=\"http:\/\/m.weibo.cn\/status\/5045228481023610\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:post on Weibo;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">post on Weibo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The final results will be announced in August and the winners will be awarded up to $30,000 in prize money.<\/p>\n<p>Working on advanced math \u201cbrings out my desire to explore,\u201d she said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bilibili.com\/video\/BV1SD421M73v\/?spm_id_from=333.337.search-card.all.click\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:interview posted;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">interview posted<\/a> by the organizers that gathered more than 4 million views, with most viewers expressing their amazement with the results and questioning if it was real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who can perceive beauty in mathematics and physics are generally at the next level,\u201d wrote one user. \u201cWe must protect and nurture them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a sign of Jiang\u2019s ascendant star, fans have gone to far as to visit her parents\u2019 home in a village in Jiangsu province along China\u2019s eastern coast, bearing gifts of alcohol and money to show their support. Hometown shopping malls hung pictures of her on their walls.<\/p>\n<p>Jiang also defeated her own teacher, Wang Runqiu, who ranked 125th in the contest.<\/p>\n<p>State media People\u2019s Daily <a href=\"http:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2024\/0617\/c90000-20181897.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reported <\/a>Wang had encouraged her to join the competition and was quoted as saying, \u201cI want to help young people as much as possible, and let them know they can have a different future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Math was her \u201chobby,\u201d Jiang said in the interview with the organizers, and said she didn\u2019t think she deserved to even join the competition.
