The islands of Martinique, Dominica and Tobago were under a tropical storm watch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area within 36 hours and that people should complete all storm preparations, including evacuations if directed by local officials. A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/mfl\/hurricanes\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hurricane watch<\/a> indicates that hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours and that residents should prepare to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Forecasters predicted Beryl <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/weather\/maps-beryl.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">would hit<\/a> Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday, with the damaging winds preceding it likely to reach the capital, Kingstown, at 8 a.m. local time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some computer weather models suggest that the storm could intensify into a major hurricane, which is a Category 3 or higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration records, only three storms have reached Category 3 status in the North Atlantic Ocean this early in the season: Alma in 1966, Audrey in 1957, and an unnamed storm in 1916.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">All made landfall on the U.S. coastline in the Gulf of Mexico: Alma near St. Marks, Fla.; Audrey near Port Arthur, Texas, and the 1916 storm near Mobile, Ala.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The system became Tropical Storm Beryl late on Friday when its sustained winds reached 39 miles per hour. At 74 m.p.h., a storm becomes a hurricane.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A named storm this far east in the Atlantic is unusual for June, John Cangialosi, a forecaster with the National Hurricane Center, wrote in an advisory Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere have only been a few storms in history that have formed over the central or eastern tropical Atlantic this early in the year,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2a1a28f7\">Here are key things to know about the storm.<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"css-1le37cb ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Swells created by Beryl are expected to reach the Windward and southern Leeward Islands by late Sunday, forecasters said, and likely cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">The storm is expected to cross the islands of the eastern Caribbean as early as Sunday night before traversing the central Caribbean Sea through the middle of the week.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Three to six inches of rain, hurricane-force winds and dangerous storm surge are possible in the eastern Caribbean Islands, including Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Sunday into Monday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">There is a fair amount of uncertainty in the forecast about the track the storm will take, especially beyond three days.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-30f97ec5\">This hurricane season is expected to be busy.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Forecasters have warned that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could be much more active than usual.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/weather\/noaa-atlantic-hurricane-forecast-prediction.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">predicted 17 to 25 named storms this year<\/a>,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>an \u201cabove-normal\u201d number and a prediction in line with more than a dozen forecasts earlier in the year from experts at universities, private companies and government agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hurricane seasons produce 14 named storms, on average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The seasonal hurricane outlooks were notably aggressive because forecasters looking at the start of the season saw a combination of circumstances that didn\u2019t exist in records dating back to the mid-1800s: record warm water temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the potential formation of the weather pattern known as La Ni\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">La Ni\u00f1a occurs in the Pacific because of changing ocean temperatures, and it affects weather patterns globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When it is strong, it typically provides a calm environment in the Atlantic.
