{"id":32725,"date":"2024-07-01T17:41:06","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T21:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/in-nigeria-female-suicide-bombers-are-a-terrorist-groups-hidden-weapon\/01\/07\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-07-01T17:41:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T21:41:06","slug":"in-nigeria-female-suicide-bombers-are-a-terrorist-groups-hidden-weapon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/in-nigeria-female-suicide-bombers-are-a-terrorist-groups-hidden-weapon\/01\/07\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"In Nigeria, Female Suicide Bombers Are a Terrorist Group\u2019s Hidden Weapon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A woman held a baby as she detonated a bomb over the weekend in northern Nigeria, killing them both and at least half a dozen others, the local authorities said, putting an abrupt end to a rare lull in the violence that has plagued the region for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was joined by two other female <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/30\/world\/africa\/suicide-bombings-nigeria.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">suicide bombers<\/a> in Nigeria\u2019s Borno State who killed at least 32 and wounded dozens more in a series of bombings, according to Vice President Kashim Shettima. The attacks, experts said, demonstrated the complex and deadly role women can play in terrorist insurgencies like Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The attackers struck three locations \u2014 a wedding celebration, an area near a hospital and a funeral service for the victims of the earlier bombing, said Barkindo Saidu, the director general of Borno State\u2019s emergency management agency. The attacks took place in Gwoza city, an area formerly controlled by Boko Haram for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though no organization has yet claimed responsibility, the attacks are similar to previous suicide bombings carried out by Boko Haram, an Islamist group responsible for tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over two million people in the region. Boko Haram made headlines in 2014 after kidnapping more than 200 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/04\/11\/world\/africa\/nigeria-boko-haram-girls.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">schoolgirls<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-28ac4d7c\">Women are sent to death because they \u2018blend in.\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Armed groups often use women as suicide bombers because they consider them less valuable to the organization and more tactically advantageous, experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe women arouse less suspicious, and they are able to penetrate targets more deeply,\u201d said Mia Bloom, a professor of communication at Georgia State University and an expert on female suicide bombers. Professor Bloom said terrorist groups often use women when targeting civilians or civic infrastructure because they \u201cblend in\u201d and are less likely to be perceived as threats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some groups also view women as easier to manipulate, said Professor Bloom, who has interviewed many survivors of Boko Haram. Many of the women Boko Haram have turned into suicide bombers, she said, have most likely been sexually assaulted and are traumatized. Some women may truly be radicalized, she said, but others believe \u201cthey have a better chance of survival as a bomber than marrying a Boko fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-272b2ab2\">One group used female suicide bombers more than half the time.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram, Al Shabaab and the Taliban have used female suicide bombers in the past, but Boko Haram has used them more frequently than other groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The group has a history of kidnapping and holding <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/10\/25\/world\/africa\/nigeria-boko-haram-suicide-bomb.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">young girls<\/a> hostage before forcing them to strap on explosives and sending them on suicide missions. Boko Haram used girls so often in some areas that the Nigerian government launched a counterterrorism campaign featuring images of young children with detonators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ctc.westpoint.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Exploding-Stereotypes-1.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research<\/a> by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point found that the group deployed women as bombers in over half of its operations, including suicide missions from April 2011 to June 2017. Many of the bombers were girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Boko Haram\u2019s former leader, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/21\/world\/africa\/nigeria-boko-haram-Abubakar-Shekau.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Abubakar Shekau<\/a>, who was killed in 2021, was notorious for sending young girls and women on suicide missions, often against their will.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-nss59b e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">Boko Haram\u2019s former leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a video released in 2018.<\/span><span class=\"css-1u46b97 e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">via Agence France-Presse \u2014 Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Cameron Hudson, a senior fellow for the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a research organization based in Washington, called Boko Haram\u2019s use of women a \u201cfeature\u201d of its militancy that is not typically seen in the West African groups of Mali and Niger, where women are not often put in operational roles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even if Boko Haram does not claim responsibility for the attack, Mr. Hudson said, the women\u2019s involvement shows terrorism in the region is not simply influencing disgruntled young men. \u201cEntire communities have been co-opted into this,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re seeing a broad based, community wide insurgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7fa40529\">The region is plagued by violence.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past decade, the Sahel, a vast semiarid region that stretches across Western and Central Africa has given rise to a number of Islamist organizations bent on insurgency. In addition to Boko Haram, the Islamic State\u2019s West Africa Province also operates in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nigeria\u2019s Borno State, which borders the neighboring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger, has long been plagued by terrorist violence, first at the hands of Boko Haram, and then by rival and splinter groups fighting for control of territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Boko Haram fighters seized Gwoza in 2014 and Mr. Shekau, the group\u2019s leader at the time, declared a caliphate before the Nigerian Army pushed the group out in 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Civilian governments across the region, including neighboring Niger, have experienced a number of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/07\/us\/politics\/us-terrorism-west-africa.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">military coups<\/a> in recent years.
