He voted for the Labour Party candidate and said he \u201choped to be celebrating on Friday\u201d with a new prime minister in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Many of the shops surrounding the couple were vacant or boarded up. Graffiti marked the sides of shuttered department stores. There is little to attract people to the area, other than the bookmakers, charity shops and small stores selling vapes, Mr. Milner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">He first came here to serve in the Navy \u2014 the city is home to the country\u2019s biggest naval base \u2014 and was deployed during the 1980s Falklands War as a chef aboard a military vessel. He was pushed out of the military because of his sexual orientation, he said, and later became deeply involved in union work after returning to civilian life. She sat outside a cafe on Wednesday evening, reminiscing with friends about how the once busy marketplace had changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was bustling, there was atmosphere,\u201d she said. \u201cBut now, it\u2019s going through decline. There is just no money in England anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">For some younger voters, the prospect of an uncertain future has weighed heavy. Several were considering casting their ballots for Reform U.K., the populist anti-immigration party led by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/26\/world\/europe\/nigel-farage-uk-politics.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nigel Farage, a brash and polarizing figure who has shaken up the general election campaign.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey are saying the right things for me,\u201d said Gemma Hobday, 43, even as her husband said he was planning to continue to back Ms. Mordaunt, who, like him, is a veteran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">But others defended the Conservative Party. In Dixie\u2019s Pub just off the high street, a group of patrons played pool on the eve of the election, the clack of billiard balls mingling with chatter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Andrew Revis, 57, was enjoying a pint at the bar after finishing work at his nearby accountancy office, and said he felt that the Conservatives and Ms. Mordaunt, whom he described as a capable and committed lawmaker, were receiving undue criticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey are getting a lot of stick, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s entirely been in their control,\u201d he said, pointing to the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine that created unexpected hardship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s the cost of living,\u201d said Kerry Harris, 36, who sat outside the Iceland supermarket with her niece Shanice Bakes, 19, on Wednesday evening. She gestured to their bags.
