shore up vulnerabilities in the healthcare system and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/06\/27\/keir-starmer-vows-to-re-negotiate-botched-post-brexit-trade-deal-with-the-eu\" UK&#8217;s Brexit deal with the European Union<\/a> \u2014 which he said had been &#8220;botched.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s rise, largely telegraphed by pre-election polls, makes the UK a clear data-ylk=\"cid:Emmanuel_Macron;pos:5;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:OfficeHolder;\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\"><a July 7, and the lead-up has evolved into a chaotic effort to keep the far right from power.<\/p>\n<p><a left.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Macron, whose approval ratings have plummeted to their lowest in his seven-year tenure as president, is keeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-04\/macron-has-gone-quiet-ahead-of-a-key-vote-his-group-is-grateful\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a low profile.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a low profile.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Brothers of Italy win a show of support<\/h2>\n<p>In Italy, the far right has already cemented its power in the form of Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/italian-far-right-leader-giorgia-meloni-ascent-to-power-2022-9?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Giorgia Meloni's;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Giorgia Meloni&#8217;s<\/a> ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy, which became the ruling party in 2022.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 646px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:67%\" support for her party;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sustaining support for her party<\/a>, it won nearly 29% of the national vote in June&#8217;s European Parliament elections, up from 6% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The runner-up was the Democratic Party, with 24.1% of the Italian vote.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, much of Europe is leaning right. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/spains-centre-right-pp-wins-european-election-blow-socialist-pm-2024-06-09\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Spain's People's Party;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Spain&#8217;s People&#8217;s Party<\/a>, a center-right faction, gained 34% of the country&#8217;s vote in the European Parliament, beating the incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez&#8217;s socialist government.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the far-right faction there, Vox, struggled to gain a foothold, with only 9.6% of the vote, down from 12.4% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cd1r0xvn0z5o\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Netherlands;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Netherlands<\/a> has also just formed a right-wing government, with its largest component being the anti-immigration and populist Party for Freedom led by Geert Wilders.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, right-wing populism in the UK is seeing clearer beginnings.
