Donner said the omission of British Columbia not only excluded the national record set in Lytton but also ignored the other instances of extreme heat in the province that summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It leaves out the heatwave in 2021 that killed hundreds of Canadians,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Local reporting said health authorities\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-heat-dome-sudden-deaths-revised-2021-1.6232758\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:estimate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">estimate<\/a> around 600 people died in Canada as a result of the extreme temperatures that June. The day after the national heat record was set in Lytton, the British Columbia village was <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2021-07-deadly-slams-canada.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:almost entirely destroyed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">almost entirely destroyed<\/a> by a nearby wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>While the misleading social media posts claimed warnings about recent extremes are overreactions, researchers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-37309-y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:predicting;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">predicting<\/a> that heat domes such as the one experienced in 2021 will become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/climate-change-made-deadly-heat-071004881.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:more intense;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more intense<\/a> because of human-caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20210707-n-america-heat-wave-virtually-impossible-without-climate-change-study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:climate change;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">climate change<\/a> (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/9V99-ZCQP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ac2966\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:near-universal consensus;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">near-universal consensus<\/a> that the burning of fossil fuels is causing global average temperatures to rise (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/SH7L-DN9X\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>). Donner said. &#8220;And that follows from what you would expect due to adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During a June 2024 heat dome seen over the east coast of North America, AFP <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.34XP88Z\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:debunked;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">debunked<\/a> separate claims that forecasts about extreme temperatures were being exaggerated.<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s in the data?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Environment and Climate Change Canada;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Environment and Climate Change Canada<\/a> (ECCC) <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.weather.gc.ca\/index_e.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:maintains;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">maintains<\/a> climate measurements going back to the 19th century in the country and shared its highest provincial and territorial temperature records with AFP on July 2.<\/p>\n<p>According to ECCC data, two more records were set in the 21st century which the social media graphic leaves out: 36.5C (97.7F) in <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.weather.gc.ca\/climate_data\/daily_data_e.html?hlyRange=%7C&amp;dlyRange=1983-09-01%7C2017-05-30&amp;mlyRange=1983-01-01%7C2007-02-01&amp;StationID=1573&amp;Prov=YT&amp;urlExtension=_e.html&amp;searchType=stnProv&amp;optLimit=yearRange&amp;StartYear=1840&amp;EndYear=2024&amp;selRowPerPage=25&amp;Line=85&amp;lstProvince=YT&amp;timeframe=2&amp;Day=7&amp;Year=2004&amp;Month=6#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Yukon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Yukon<\/a> in 2004 and 39.9C (103.82F) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.weather.gc.ca\/climate_data\/daily_data_e.html?hlyRange=2014-11-04%7C2024-07-07&amp;dlyRange=2014-11-06%7C2024-07-07&amp;mlyRange=%7C&amp;StationID=53119&amp;Prov=NT&amp;urlExtension=_e.html&amp;searchType=stnProv&amp;optLimit=yearRange&amp;StartYear=1840&amp;EndYear=2024&amp;selRowPerPage=25&amp;Line=62&amp;lstProvince=NT&amp;timeframe=2&amp;time=LST&amp;Day=7&amp;Year=2021&amp;Month=6#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Northwest Territories;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Northwest Territories<\/a>, also during the June 2021 heat dome (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/L59T-AMRU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/6766-DN95\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>). The ECCC said its highest recorded temperature for <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.weather.gc.ca\/climate_data\/daily_data_e.html?hlyRange=1978-01-01%7C2014-12-04&amp;dlyRange=1977-12-01%7C2014-12-03&amp;mlyRange=1977-01-01%7C2014-12-01&amp;StationID=1641&amp;Prov=NU&amp;urlExtension=_e.html&amp;searchType=stnProv&amp;optLimit=yearRange&amp;StartYear=1840&amp;EndYear=2024&amp;selRowPerPage=25&amp;Line=137&amp;lstProvince=NU&amp;timeframe=2&amp;time=LST&amp;Day=4&amp;Year=1989&amp;Month=7#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nunavut;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nunavut<\/a> was 34.9 C (94.82 F) in 1989, before the region <a higher and later records than those claimed in the posts for <a
