NATO boss Jens Stoltenberg<\/a><\/span><\/span> on Thursday upped the ante against China\u2019s alignment with Russia, criticizing Beijing for \u201coppressing its own people\u201d and threatening Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the closing press conference after the NATO summit, Stoltenberg doubled down on NATO\u2019s latest labeling of China as a \u201cdecisive enabler\u201d of Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine, which was amplified in the NATO leaders\u2019 declaration a day ago.<\/p>\n

When asked about China\u2019s ongoing military exercise with Belarus, Stoltenberg said: \u201cThe Chinese exercise together with Belarusian forces \u2026 just confirms how authoritarian regimes are aligning more and more, and also how China is coming closer to NATO, in Europe, in Africa and the Arctic and elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chinese-Belarusian anti-terrorism exercises, conducted not far from the border with NATO ally Poland, coincide with the NATO summit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to remember what kind of regimes we are speaking about,\u201d Stoltenberg said. \u201cWe are speaking about authoritarian regimes. China is oppressing its own people, cracking down on democratic voices \u2026 in Hong Kong, more assertive behavior in the South China Sea, threatening neighbors, threatening Taiwan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd China is conducting a huge military buildup with no transparency and investing heavily in modern missiles [and] nuclear weapons,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In an emailed response to POLITICO, the Polish Foreign Ministry said it \u201cnoted\u201d the joint exercises between China and Belarus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been closely monitoring the ongoing military cooperation between Belarus and China for years, recognizing its potential impact on Poland’s security,\u201d it said on Wednesday. \u201cWe are concerned about China’s deepening military cooperation with Russia and Belarus \u2014 countries involved in aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Polish authorities added that these actions \u201cmultiply threats in our neighborhood\u201d and \u201ccall into question China’s attempts to position itself as a neutral state in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
