The researchers were observing a cluster of stars in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A (Sgr A) at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. They then discovered signs of an intermediate-mass black hole, a type of black hole that\u2019s sometimes referred to as the \u201cmissing link\u201d of black holes, according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/black-holes\/types\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Black holes range in size from supermassive to primordial and the intermediate sits above primordial in size. They are believed to have formed just after the Big Bang and act as \u201cseeds\u201d for creating supermassive black holes.<\/p>\n<p>The star cluster believed to be the latest intermediate-mass black hole dubbed IRS 13 moved in an orderly pattern when they expected them to be randomly arranged. The researchers concluded that the star cluster had to be interacting with the supermassive black hole and \u201cthere must be something inside the cluster for it to be able to maintain its observed compact shape,\u201d according to a statement from the University of Cologne.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are underway to conduct further observations on the intermediate black hole. They will use the James Webb Space Telescope and the Extremely Large Telescope in Chile that\u2019s currently under construction (and yes, that is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/elt.eso.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:its real name;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists discovered <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/astronomers-discover-a-black-hole-that-shouldnt-exist-120040289.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHiObdMZq-1m_mSaj12R0VIhRXy4gft6tWs4-X6IebZxeWx6YYJH6hb7BSA8wxjUDywXriDISA76cjqJdE3SWaktukEFSe0O5WnjHLHQJVf6bC3CjzWluMv3U23XghgYuWfm_Qt3aUOr4M14iAHQXZHymAbTVzvBXmyDqx3-RQ91\" data-ylk=\"slk:the first intermediate-mass black hole;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><\/a> in 2020 using the Hubble Space Telescope when they found the waves created by its formation.
