{"id":33914,"date":"2024-07-24T04:14:38","date_gmt":"2024-07-24T08:14:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/dozens-arrested-in-uganda-anti-government-protests\/24\/07\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-07-24T04:14:38","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T08:14:38","slug":"dozens-arrested-in-uganda-anti-government-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/dozens-arrested-in-uganda-anti-government-protests\/24\/07\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens arrested in Uganda anti-government protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Dozens of people have been detained in the Ugandan capital Kampala after joining scattered anti-corruption protests in defiance of an official ban.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers said around 60 people, including a prominent TV presenter and three young protest leaders, were hurriedly brought before courts and remanded in custody following a march on the country&#8217;s parliament on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caas-xray-inline-tooltip\"><span class=\"caas-xray-inline caas-xray-entity caas-xray-pill rapid-nonanchor-lt\" data-entity-id=\"Yoweri_Museveni\" data-ylk=\"cid:Yoweri_Museveni;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:Politician;\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\"><a href=\"https:\/\/search.yahoo.com\/search?p=Yoweri%20Museveni\" data-i13n=\"cid:Yoweri_Museveni;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:Politician;\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-ylk=\"slk:President Yoweri Museveni;cid:Yoweri_Museveni;pos:1;elmt:wiki;sec:pill-inline-entity;elm:pill-inline-text;itc:1;cat:Politician;\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">President Yoweri Museveni<\/a><\/span><\/span>, who has ruled Uganda for almost four decades, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cd1r250my18o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:warned before the event;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">warned before the event<\/a> that protesters were &#8220;playing with fire&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The march was organised on social media amid anger over long-running allegations of corruption involving several high-profile public officials.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were partly inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crgkmkz5d0vo?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:demonstrations last month in neighbouring Kenya;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">demonstrations last month in neighbouring Kenya<\/a> which forced President William Ruto to drop planned tax rises.<\/p>\n<p>Police previously announced that they had refused to give permission for the march and would not allow any demonstration that threatened Uganda&#8217;s &#8220;peace and security&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, riot officers were seen manning roadblocks, while members of the security forces sealed off roads and stood guard around the parliament building.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures showed marchers holding signs that read &#8220;Stop corruption&#8221; and calling the parliament a &#8220;den of thieves&#8221;. Another said: &#8220;We are peaceful protesters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Others showed protesters being manhandled by police and pushed into the back of riot vans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are tired of corruption,&#8221; protester Samson Kiriya told AFP news agency through the bars of a van after being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Those detained included well-known television and radio presenter Faiza Salima as well as three protest organisers &#8211; George Victor Otieno, Kennedy Ndyamuhaki and Aloikin Praise Opoloje.<\/p>\n<p>Bernard Oundo, president of the Uganda Law Society, said one hearing saw 50 people charged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was a rushed trial.
