The second series of explosions seems to have targeted walkie-talkies used by members of the Iran-backed militant group, although there are suggestions that a variety of different electronic devices may have been affected. While Israel has not claimed responsibility for either of the two days\u2019 attacks, Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2024\/sep\/18\/middle-east-crisis-live-hezbollah-pager-explosion-lebanon-irael-iran-latest-updates?page=with:block-66eb01128f0860cc21944dba#block-66eb01128f0860cc21944dba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:declared;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">declared<\/a> the start of a \u201cnew phase\u201d of the war with a focus on the northern front.<\/p>\n<p>The latest reports from the Lebanese health ministry state that 14 were killed and more than 450 wounded in explosions that struck multiple cities across Lebanon today. Three of those killed were said to have been in the Bekaa region in the east of the country. people\u2019s homes across Lebanon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nna-leb.gov.lb\/ar\/justice-law\/722390\/%D8%A7%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A9-%D9%81%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A9-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%81%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D9%86%D8%B8%D8%A7%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according <\/a>to the <em>National News Agency<\/em>, with at least one such blast injuring a girl in the town of al-Zahrani, south Lebanon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-pull-quote-wrapper caas-img caas-lazy\" data-src=\"\">\n<blockquote class=\"caas-blockquote\">\n<p>BREAKING:<\/p>\n<p>All types of electric devices owned by Hezbollah operatives are now blowing up in Lebanon and the region.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from pagers and walkie-talkies, other devices such as fingerprint devices, solar power systems and radios are now exploding too <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JLjsK2w7co\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" in the tweet above.<\/p>\n<p>Additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-planted-explosives-hezbollahs-taiwan-made-pagers-say-sources-2024-09-18\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reports;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reports<\/a> state that at least one of the models of walkie-talkie that exploded in Lebanon today was discontinued, but that Hezbollah got a shipment of them five months ago, around the same time that it appears to have received the pagers involved in yesterday\u2019s blasts. This would clearly point to the devices being tampered with before they arrived in Hezbollah\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>However it was achieved, today\u2019s events do at least suggest that many more types of electronic devices could have been modified into explosive devices, raising more questions about how the attacks were orchestrated, and whether more will come. The deeper implications of this dystopian development are something we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/hezbollah-exploding-pagers-could-monumental-185109341.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:previously discussed at length;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">previously discussed at length<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-pull-quote-wrapper caas-img caas-lazy\" data-src=\"\">\n<blockquote class=\"caas-blockquote\">\n<p>UPDATE \u2013 The radios that were booby-trapped in advance by Israeli intelligence services and then delivered to Hezbollah were part of the group&#8217;s emergency communications system which was supposed to be used during a war with Israel, sources tell Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9xXP55rhnv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:https:\/\/t.co\/9xXP55rhnv;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">https:\/\/t.co\/9xXP55rhnv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Faytuks News (@Faytuks) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Faytuks\/status\/1836413820006269411?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:September 18, 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">September 18, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, if Israel is now able to target Hezbollah members and associates via a variety of types of electronic devices, the last two days of attacks may also imply that Israel is poised to launch a large-scale campaign against the militant group.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do these explosions help remove key Hezbollah figures from the equation, but they also greatly reduce the group\u2019s ability to communicate and maintain a chain of command. Then there is the significant factor of sowing fear and confusion within Hezbollah but also more broadly within Lebanon, comprising the group\u2019s ability to operate more freely. Overloading the hospitals with injuries would be another impact of these detonations that would benefit an opposing force prior to a campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In a reflection of the chaos created by the blasts, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-planted-explosives-hezbollahs-taiwan-made-pagers-say-sources-2024-09-18\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reports;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reports<\/a> today of Hezbollah members frantically pulling the batteries out of any walkie-talkies that had not exploded, and putting the parts in metal barrels, in case they detonated.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>TWZ<\/em> editor-in-chief Tyler Rogoway has observed, if Israel invested heavily into such an exotic espionage capability, it may be compelled to use it to its maximum extent as rapidly as possible if there was imminent risk of it being compromised. Under ideal circumstances, such measures would be exploited prior to or just at the beginning of a major military operation in order to degrade the opposing for as discussed above. Now there are signs that Israel is about to launch just such an operation. There are also reports that the detonation of these devices was rushed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/09\/18\/hezbollah-pager-explosions-israel-suspicions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:out of fears that the operation would be uncovered.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">out of fears that the operation would be uncovered.<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-pull-quote-wrapper caas-img caas-lazy\" data-src=\"\">\n<blockquote class=\"caas-blockquote\">\n<p>Clearly, if you have the ability to detonate pagers and other electronic devices belonging to players in your adversary&#8217;s ranks, you do it right before or at the start of a major military operation to:<br \/>1.) Take many players, including key ones, off the board <br \/>2.) Even before today\u2019s explosions, U.N. Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said it was \u201cvery important\u201d that civilian objects should not be weaponized.<\/p>\n<p>The U.N. chief said that yesterday\u2019s explosions presented \u201ca serious risk of a dramatic escalation in Lebanon\u201d and warned that \u201ceverything must be done\u201d to avoid that. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said the country has drawn up plans for additional action against Hezbollah and is ready to strike.<\/p>\n<p>Halevi also warned that Israel has \u201cmany more capabilities\u201d that have not been used yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have many capabilities that we have not yet activated\u2026 we have seen some of these things, it seems to me that we are well prepared, and we are preparing these plans going forward.
