{"id":3637,"date":"2023-10-27T10:34:16","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T14:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/get-married-at-the-stanley-a-spooky-hotel-inspired-by-the-shining\/27\/10\/2023\/"},"modified":"2023-10-27T10:34:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T14:34:16","slug":"get-married-at-the-stanley-a-spooky-hotel-inspired-by-the-shining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/entertainment\/get-married-at-the-stanley-a-spooky-hotel-inspired-by-the-shining\/27\/10\/2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Married at the Stanley, a Spooky Hotel Inspired by \u2018The Shining\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Couples who get married in October at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/04\/us\/hotel-that-inspired-the-shining-builds-on-its-eerie-appeal.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Stanley Hotel,<\/a> situated at the doorstep of the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park, Colo., sometimes have a hard time getting their guests to R.S.V.P.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lauren Nichols and Jeffrey Sheffler, who will marry there Oct. 28, couldn\u2019t convince a dozen of their out-of-town guests to stay on the premises of the hotel that inspired <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/05\/04\/arts\/best-stephen-king-books.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Stephen King<\/a> to write \u201cThe Shining,\u201d his novel turned film, after staying there in 1974. And Melanie Pingel, who married Kyle Johnson there Oct. 13, was compelled to reserve a quiet space on a separate floor for guests who needed a moment away from the ghostly festivities. \u201cMy mom called it the place where the old ladies get to go have a break from it all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These and other concessions \u2014 Jennie Wilson, a 2017 Stanley bride, was told by a guest \u201cstraight up that she wouldn\u2019t come\u201d \u2014 are perhaps a necessary trade-off for couples who want to exchange vows at what many call \u201cThe Shining\u201d hotel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Only a handful of couples who plan well in advance are greenlit for their October celebrations, said John Cullen, the Stanley\u2019s owner. Those who do snag a spot between Oct. 1 and Halloween, the hotel\u2019s busiest season, tend to share a common aesthetic: bridal fangs and cakes with Frankenstein-like surgical stitching can be part of it. Flower girls dressed as the sinister, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/the-photograph-that-inspired-the-twins-in-the-shining\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not-quite-living Grady twins<\/a> from the 1980 horror classic, or table d\u00e9cor that includes jars of pig hearts preserved in formaldehyde, can also be used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The spookiness of the place is the allure for many couples, said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cherrybombweddings.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shayna Papke<\/a>, a popular local planner for Halloween season weddings at the Stanley. \u201cA wedding is the ultimate expression of who you are, and there are just people in the world who, this is who they are,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re the outliers who like dark music and dark stories. They\u2019re fascinated by the death part of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many who fit that description flock to the Stanley for a ghost tour led by the hotel\u2019s staff or to participate in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stanleyhotel.com\/13-a-seance-at-the-stanley.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">s\u00e9ance<\/a> (More than 100,000 people visit per year; October is busy also because elk walk the streets and it\u2019s \u201ca really nice time to be in Estes Park,\u201d Mr. Cullen said.) Still others consider it the ultimate location for committing to each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNothing says I love you like murdering your wife and kids, like in \u2018The Shining,\u2019 right?\u201d Ms. Pingel, said jokingly. She worked with Ms. Papke to orchestrate their Friday the 13th wedding at the Pavilion, one of three indoor wedding spaces on the sprawling grounds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Pingel, 35, and Mr. Johnson, 36, who live in Los Angeles, chose the Stanley for what they hoped would feel like \u201can elegant Victorian funeral\u201d to their 105 guests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A ceiling-strung contortionist, ghostly white-eyed cabaret dancers in fishnet stockings passing Champagne flutes and a hearse with flamethrowers and bat wings were all part of that aesthetic at their wedding. So were mini coffins used as place settings and cascades of red amaranth flowers meant to mimic dripping blood. Before the reception, guests opting to have tattoos were asked to sign waivers giving their permission to be inked by a local artist with designs including a grim reaper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur taste is a little different than most people\u2019s taste,\u201d said Mr. Johnson, an art director at Bravado, which provides merchandising for major pop stars. Friends often comment on the taxidermic rat on their refrigerator and the funeral photos hanging on the walls of their home, said Ms. Pingel, an intensive care nurse at Thousand Oaks Los Robles Regional Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Her custom black wedding gown by Kim Kassas and the black bread served with butter topped with beet pur\u00e9e for another blood-like look at the post-wedding dinner may not have elicited swoons from traditionalists, she acknowledged. But fellow October brides, like Ms. Wilson, 34, who started preserving the pig hearts she used for table decorations a year before her Friday the 13th wedding to Kris Wilson, 35, tend to get it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMost of our friends would say we\u2019re some of the weirdest friends they have,\u201d said Ms. Wilson, who does social media and voice-over work for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/explosm.net\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCyanide &amp; Happiness,\u201d<\/a> the darkly humorous Web comic co-founded by Mr. Wilson. The couple, from Fort Collins, Colo., collect bones and horror movie memorabilia; 300 guests came to their wedding at the Stanley, which included the Grady twin-like flower girls and the cake with monster stitching (\u201cIt was supposed to bleed when you cut into it, but it didn\u2019t work,\u201d she said.) Ms. Papke planned the wedding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Papke will also pull off the vision of Ms. Nichols, 39, and Mr. Sheffler, 40, of Denver, on Oct. 28, when they exchange vows in the hotel\u2019s Pavilion on a date they chose because it\u2019s a Hunter\u2019s moon (sometimes called a blood full moon). The goal is for a wedding for 140 that is \u201cpretty theatrical,\u201d said Ms. Nichols, the sourcing and purchasing manager for a natural tincture<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em><\/strong>company who also owns<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em><\/strong>her own herbal skin care company, Blue Yarrow Herbs. Mr. Sheffler is an account executive for Hotel Engine, a hotel booking platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Flourishes they dreamed up with the help of Ms. Papke will include a black wedding gown accessorized with bridal fangs and bat wings, a best man dressed as a dragon and an animatronic Annabelle doll from the movie \u201cThe Conjuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShe\u2019ll kind of float around,\u201d said Ms. Nichols of the doll that will be on rollers. \u201cI guess we\u2019re trying to scare people. But in our minds that\u2019s normal. Jeff and I are just alternative.\u201d A skeleton couple will top their cake.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Papke is ready. She says she prides herself on never doing \u201cweddings where everything is styled very pretty, where it\u2019s a white dress and blush flowers and guests walk in and it\u2019s chicken and mashed potatoes and then people dance to \u2018Y.M.C.A.\u2019 and leave to bubbles in the ballroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m totally into it,\u201d she said.
