Photo: Bloomberg&gt;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Established in 2021 with 8.2 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) in government funding, JFS is one of China&#8217;s key institutions tasked with pursuing technological breakthroughs.<\/p>\n<p>Major players in the global semiconductor industry have devoted resources into advancing silicon photonics, which is believed to hold the future to making better chips for data and graphics processing, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:artificial intelligence (AI);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a>. Still, businesses have faced challenges in translating scientific breakthroughs into commercial products.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/taiwan-semiconductor-manufacturing-company-tsmc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company<\/a>, the world&#8217;s top contract chip maker, is one of the companies working on the technology. Its vice-president, Douglas Yu Chen-hua, last year said that a &#8220;good silicon photonics integration system&#8221; could address critical issues in energy efficiency and computing power in the AI era.<\/p>\n<p>That development would bring about a &#8220;paradigm shift&#8221; in the industry, he said.<\/p>\n<p>US chip design giants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/nvidia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nvidia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nvidia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/intel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Intel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Intel<\/a>, as well as China&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/knowledge\/companies\/huawei\/news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Huawei Technologies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Huawei Technologies<\/a>, are also eyeing advances in silicon photonics. Photo: Reuters&gt;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Silicon photonics may present an even bigger opportunity in China, where US export controls on advanced chip-making technologies have hindered the development of traditional semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>Silicon photonics chips can be produced domestically using &#8220;relatively mature raw materials and equipment&#8221; without relying on high-end <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/big-tech\/article\/3278235\/chinese-chip-making-shows-progress-new-euv-patent-domestic-lithography-champion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines<\/a>, unlike electrical chips, Sui Jun, president of Beijing-based semiconductor start-up Sintone, was quoted as saying by local media in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>EUV machines, required for making advanced chips, are considered the Achilles&#8217; heel of the Chinese semiconductor industry, as domestic firms struggle to mass-produce such tools.
