{"id":36971,"date":"2024-10-07T18:53:31","date_gmt":"2024-10-07T22:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/scientists-cracked-open-a-2-billion-year-old-stone-and-discovered-something-entirely-unexpected\/07\/10\/2024\/"},"modified":"2024-10-07T18:53:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-07T22:53:31","slug":"scientists-cracked-open-a-2-billion-year-old-stone-and-discovered-something-entirely-unexpected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/scientists-cracked-open-a-2-billion-year-old-stone-and-discovered-something-entirely-unexpected\/07\/10\/2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Cracked Open a 2-Billion-Year-Old Stone and Discovered Something Entirely Unexpected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Microbes Rock<\/h2>\n<p>A very old rock \u2014 or rather, what&#8217;s inside of it \u2014might force scientists to rewrite what we know about the evolution of life on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>As detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00248-024-02434-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">new study<\/a> published in the journal <em>Microbial Ecology<\/em>, scientists discovered living microbes sealed inside a 2-billion-year-old stone.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s &#8220;the oldest example of living microbes being found within ancient rock so far discovered,&#8221; according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-10-billion-year-early-life-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:press release;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t know if 2-billion-year-old rocks were habitable,&#8221; said lead study author Yohey Suzuki, an associate professor in the Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo, in a statement. &#8220;Until now, the oldest geological layer in which living microorganisms had been found was a 100-million-year-old deposit beneath the ocean floor, so this is a very exciting discovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a sense, the rock is something of a time machine. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalhistory.si.edu\/education\/teaching-resources\/life-science\/early-life-earth-animal-origins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:current scientific understanding;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">current scientific understanding<\/a> is that the earliest life on Earth emerged about 3.5 billion years ago. Humans, <a href=\"https:\/\/humanorigins.si.edu\/evidence\/human-fossils\/species\/homo-sapiens#:~:text=Overview:,who%20lived%20during%20prehistoric%20times.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:in comparison;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">in comparison<\/a>, have only been around for a few hundred thousand years or so.<\/p>\n<p>As the researchers write in their study, the microbes, which were confirmed to be indigenous to the stone, appear to have evolved <em>incredibly<\/em> slowly over time. That means further study into the newly unearthed organism<strong>s&#8217;<\/strong> genetic makeup could reveal unprecedented insights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By studying the DNA and genomes of microbes like these,&#8221; said Suzuki, &#8220;we may be able to understand the evolution of very early life on Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Inward, then Outward<\/h2>\n<p>The ancient stone was discovered in South Africa&#8217;s Bushvelt Igneous Complex by way of ultradeep drilling.<\/p>\n<p>The international coalition of scientists believes that further study of the rock&#8217;s microbial community could have repercussions for ongoing research into life on <em>other\u00a0<\/em>planets as well.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/mars-sample-return\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:key objective;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">key objective<\/a> of NASA&#8217;s Perseverance mission is to retrieve physical samples from Mars.
