A year later, they are still seeking answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had been valued a little more \u2014 not much, just a little \u2014 maybe it could have ended differently,\u201d\u00a0Roni Lifshitz, one of the former observers, told NBC News last month. \u201cIt\u2019s anger and sadness, mainly frustration, because I was there and no one listened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lifshitz, 21, was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/now\/video\/israeli-defense-forces-release-results-of-probe-into-world-central-kitchen-strike-208389189792\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Israel Defense Forces;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Israel Defense Forces<\/a>&#8216; unit 414 stationed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/investigations\/top-secret-hamas-documents-show-terrorists-intentionally-targeted-elem-rcna120310\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nahal Oz military base;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nahal Oz military base<\/a> on the Gaza border. Soldiers in the all-women field observers team, most just 19 or 20 years old and fulfilling their mandatory military service, would spend hours glued to feeds from surveillance cameras watching for threats.<\/p>\n<p>In the months leading up to Oct. 7, Lifshitz said she started noticing unusual activity. Truckloads of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/israel-hamas-war-gaza-journalists-deadliest-conflict-rcna172282\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hamas militants;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Hamas militants<\/a>, which appeared to be special forces units because they were all dressed in black, were driving within 300 yards of the fence, in a \u201ccombat patrol,\u201d she said. They were actually practicing scenarios that happened on Oct. 7,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Lifshitz said she reported all of these events up the official chain of command, but was met with silence. \u201cNo one updated me. No one told me, \u2018Roni, what you reported is being handled,\u2019 or \u2018Just so you know, they\u2019re doing something about it, they\u2019re dealing with it, they heard about it.\u2019 No one said anything to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>On the morning of the attacks, Lifshitz was training in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas militants stormed the Nahal Oz Base and 15 of Lifshitz\u2019s colleagues \u2014 all young women like her \u2014were killed in the assault. Seven more were dragged away into Gaza. Video taken on the day of the attack shows some of the young women covered in blood. Most were wearing sweatpants and the clothes they were sleeping in. Some were later seen in the streets of Gaza being put in jeeps and trucks.<\/p>\n<p>One of Lifshitz\u2019s colleagues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/hostage-families-share-disturbing-video-israeli-soldiers-abducted-hama-rcna153558\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ori;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ori<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/hostage-families-share-disturbing-video-israeli-soldiers-abducted-hama-rcna153558\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Megidish;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Megidish<\/a>, was rescued weeks after the attacks, and another, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/information-missteps-led-questions-israels-credibility-rcna125723\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Noa Marciana;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Noa Marciana<\/a>, was killed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/idf-retreat-al-shifa-hospital-palestinians-rubble-dead-rcna147061\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza<\/a>, according to the Israeli military. Why am I different from them? Why were they murdered, and I wasn\u2019t?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She and other surviving members of unit 414 are also seeking answers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want an answer to just one question,\u201d she said. \u201cWho received the information and didn\u2019t give the order to do something about it? Who turned a blind eye, and who is responsible for this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the warnings issued by the observers were acted upon or ignored, the Israeli military told NBC it is currently focused on fighting Hamas and \u201cquestions of this kind will be looked into at a later stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a July meeting between the observers, their families and Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/israel-hamas-war-hostage-deal-netanyahu-polls-families-rcna154841\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>, his office said in a statement that he heard their requests for an investigation and promised that \u201cmatters would be thoroughly checked and that the lessons would be learned at all levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Tuesday on a visit to Nahal Oz, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said it was the site of &#8220;a terrible massacre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I very much hope that the investigation will be published fully and comprehensively, to shed light on everything that happened. It won&#8217;t change reality, but it&#8217;s good that we know the truth in order to draw lessons,&#8221; Herzog said.<\/p>\n<p>But so far, Israel has not launched an official inquiry, despite pleas from the families of observers and other victims of the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Undeterred, surviving members of unit 414 have been making their concerns public.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Lifshitz and two other former soldiers, Amit Yerushalmi and Margaret Weinstein, took part in an unofficial civil commission of inquiry that has been collecting evidence of intelligence failures around the Hamas attacks, which saw 1,200 people and around 240 people taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies. Other members include retired Maj. Gen.\u00a0Eyal Ben-Reuven, retired Brig. Gen.General Yehudit Grisaro and Shlomo Aharonishki, who served as the high commissioner of the Israeli Police between 2001 and 2008. Raphael Ben-Sheetrit, the former mayor of the northern town of Beit She\u2019an, also sits on the commission. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking for an answer to the families \u2014 what really happened?\u201d said Rubenstein, who, like Rosenbaum, worked in crisis management before the attacks. \u201cIf the army failed, I need to understand what\u2019s happened in the army. If the government failed, I need to understand what\u2019s happened over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite receiving no support from the government, the commission is pressing on with the investigation and plans to release a preliminary report next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Israeli citizens will not have these answers, how can we make sure that this will never be happening again,\u201d Rosenbaum said of their mission.<\/p>\n<p>Other former and current soldiers have also testified before their commission, as well as members of the intelligence community, journalists, former prime ministers and other government officials.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna50706343\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:opposition leader Yair Lapid;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">opposition leader Yair Lapid<\/a> testified that, two months before the Oct. 7 attacks, he had taken part in a military intelligence briefing in which Netanyahu received detailed warnings that Hamas had noticed a weakness, division and a loss of military competence in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu appeared \u201cbored and indifferent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 640px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:67%\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/KP3DVD5bo3VpdfgXI31BAg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTI0MDA7aD0xNjAw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/nbc_news_122\/2f9c58e222205755971f4bffeabd5066\"><span class=\"caas-img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Israeli military soldiers in a new surveillance and situation room in Re\u2019im Camp, built after their previous base at Nahal Oz was overrun and destroyed in the Hamas terror attack. He did not pay attention to it the way the prime minister should pay attention to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These days, Lifshitz\u00a0wears a necklace with a small photo of her friend Shahaf Nissani, a young woman with a big mass of curly, chestnut colored hair spilling out and around her face and across her neck. She was Lifshitz\u2019s best friend, and a fellow observer, who was also killed at the base.<\/p>\n<p>When customers at her shoe store ask her about the necklace, she tells them about her friend and then tries to change the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can see I hide my emotions,\u201d she said. \u201cI laugh, joke, and seem happy and go out, but my heart is broken, black.
