The young Palestinian journalist, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/palestinian-journalist-plestia-alaqad-flees-190903974.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:risked her life to document the horrors of the war;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">risked her life to document the horrors of the war<\/a> in Gaza for her millions around the world, moved to Lebanon last month to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/gaza-ap-palestinian-gaza-city-israeli-b2606286.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">study<\/a> at the prestigious American University of Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>Alaqad says Lebanon felt like her second home for a while. She had just a few weeks taking lessons and walking the green west Beirut campus before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-lebanon-beirut-strikes-mayor-war-b2630088.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the war found her again;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the war found her again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s devastating to feel like Israel\u2019s wars are just following you,\u201d she tells<em> The Independent <\/em>by phone.<em> \u201c<\/em>And it hurts to see millions of people\u2019s lives on pause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel launched its war in Lebanon last month following a year of escalating violence with Hezbollah. Much of the south, and the capital Beirut, was hit by heavy bombing as Israel launched a new offensive against its neighbor to the north. Hundreds of civilians have been killed and more than one million people displaced from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>For 22-year-old Alaqad, it brought back painful memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw displaced people in the streets in Lebanon and in schools, it reminded me of everything the Palestinian people lived through. Would it end? Would the airport get bombed and I get stuck there? So I thought it\u2019s better to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She now lives in Egypt, and studies remotely. She is starting again, again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter everything that has happened, I don\u2019t really believe in planning anymore,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Alaqad had only been out of university a year when the Gaza war began. She had studied journalism and wanted to pursue it as a career. A natural on social media, she shared snapshots of her daily life in the blockaded territory: a day at the beach, hanging out with friends, or modeling traditional Palestinian clothes.<\/p>\n<p>When the war arrived, she quickly turned her attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CyMUznTrngn\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:documenting the devastation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">documenting the devastation<\/a> caused by massive Israeli bombings across Gaza. She focused on the suffering of civilians, who were constantly on the run from bombings and advances by the Israeli army. Her videos offered a close-up view of how the war was upending lives and families every day.<\/p>\n<p>Her work earned her plaudits, but as the war drags on into its second year, she has lost hope that journalism can make a real difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople keep telling me how much my work changed the way people view Palestinians, how it played an important role. And for me, if I did all that, and if my work was all that good, then why has the genocide not ended?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why you feel everything you did is nothing,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Since leaving Gaza, Alaqadad has continued to speak out about the devastation caused by Israel\u2019s war, which has now killed an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/longform\/2023\/10\/9\/israel-hamas-war-in-maps-and-charts-live-tracker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:41,000 Palestinians.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>41,000 Palestinians.<\/u><\/a> But adjusting to her new reality has been difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife will never be normal. I\u2019ll never see life the same way I used to see it back then, and it\u2019s heartbreaking,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sad to see that almost 2 million people have been bombed for more than a year now, and it\u2019s hard to be far away from all of that happening. This is not a movie that I\u2019m watching online, these are people I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/war-in-gaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:130 Palestinian journalists;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>130 Palestinian journalists<\/u><\/a> have been killed in Gaza over the past year, many of them her former colleagues. She checks in regularly with her journalist friends who are still there. Just the day before she speaks with <em>The Independent,<\/em> she was talking to a friend who narrowly escaped death. They left a tented area outside of a hospital just five minutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-gaza-al-aqsa-hospital-deaths-b2628725.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:before it was bombed by Israel;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">before it was bombed by Israel<\/a>. A video of the attack showed a man being burned alive while he was attached to an IV drip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I talk to them, it\u2019s as if they\u2019re just waiting to get killed. They know it will happen. All rights reserved)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Alaqad went to Beirut to pursue a Master\u2019s degree in media studies on a scholarship named after Palestinian journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/boldly.aub.edu.lb\/impact-stories\/aub-and-the-yafa-foundation-partner-to-honor-shireen-abu-akleh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Shireen Abu Akleh;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>Shireen Abu Akleh<\/u><\/a>, who was killed by the Israeli army in the West Bank while she was covering a protest for Al Jazeera in 2022. The last year has given Alaqad plenty of first-hand experience for her studies and she believes the media has failed in some of its basic duties when reporting on Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil now, the media outlets are failing at naming things what they are. They still call it an Israel-Hamas conflict. If it\u2019s an Israel-Hamas conflict, then why are thousands of kids getting killed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome families no longer exist. Israel has bombed buildings, houses, most churches got bombed, starving people. So how is that a conflict?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alaqad is now working on a book about those first weeks of the Gaza war based on the diary she kept while in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>She announced the book last month on her Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife is funny. Today, the Lebanese sky above me is in flames. Today is also the announcement day of my book Eyes of Gaza, which I started writing way back on October 7 2023 \u2013 or as I knew it, week 1,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Reliving those months of war while writing the book has been tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s emotionally challenging to revisit everything I\u2019ve experienced,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m eager to share the book with the world. I believe it will offer valuable insight into the Palestinian experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alaqad made her name covering the war and the suffering of Palestinians, but she still believes that her earlier work \u2014 the videos of her showing normal daily life in Gaza \u2014\u00a0 is just as important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I often think about is how can we keep Gaza alive,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you search Gaza online, you will only see pictures of us bombed. You won\u2019t see pictures of the places, the people and everything.
