{"id":3786,"date":"2023-10-28T21:25:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T01:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/ricciardo-on-alphatauri-pace-in-mexico-it-was-no-fluke\/28\/10\/2023\/"},"modified":"2023-10-28T21:25:18","modified_gmt":"2023-10-29T01:25:18","slug":"ricciardo-on-alphatauri-pace-in-mexico-it-was-no-fluke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/sport\/ricciardo-on-alphatauri-pace-in-mexico-it-was-no-fluke\/28\/10\/2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Ricciardo on AlphaTauri pace in Mexico: It was no fluke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-meta\">\n<ul class=\"authors\">\n<li class=\"mugshot-shown\">\n<div class=\"author-img\"><\/div>\n<p>Laurence Edmondson, F1 Editor<span class=\"timestamp \">Oct 29, 2023, 01:02 AM<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"author-overlay\"><a class=\"icon-font-after icon-close-solid-after\" href=\"#\">Close<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\u2022\u00a0Joined ESPN in 2009<br \/>\u2022\u00a0An FIA accredited F1 journalist since 2011<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>After securing fourth on the grid for Sunday&#8217;s Mexican Grand Prix, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/rpm\/driver?seriesId=6&amp;driverId=4510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> said he would allow himself an hour of celebration before focusing on turning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/f1\/report?id=600026787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Saturday&#8217;s qualifying<\/a> result into points.<\/p>\n<p>Ricciardo was just 0.216s off Charles Leclerc&#8217;s pole position time and outqualified Red Bull&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/rpm\/driver?seriesId=6&amp;driverId=4472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sergio P\u00e9rez<\/a>, who could only manage fifth place behind the Australian.<\/p>\n<p>The result carries extra significance as Ricciardo, driving for Red Bull&#8217;s junior team AlphaTauri this year, has made it clear that he wants to take Perez&#8217;s seat at Red Bull when the Mexican&#8217;s contract expires at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look, it&#8217;s cool,&#8221; Ricciardo said when pushed on what it means to outqualify Perez. &#8220;I got asked, oh you&#8217;re ahead of Checo tomorrow, how does that feel? I mean, it feels cool, but I&#8217;m ahead of a lot of people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;There&#8217;s part of me which for the next hour wants to celebrate today, because it&#8217;s certainly a day that should be celebrated. I think the team as well, it&#8217;s not often they qualify this far up the grid, especially this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m just glad I got the most out of it. He said he hadn&#8217;t expected to secure such a high grid position, but believes the car&#8217;s performance is genuine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously P4 is amazing, but then when you look at pole, it was two-tenths, it&#8217;s not like Max or someone was seven or eight-tenths down the road,&#8221; Ricciardo added. &#8220;So the gap is just as cool as the position, if you know what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really there, and who knows what it means for tomorrow? I don&#8217;t feel today was a fluke. I really feel like we had strong pace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt with a perfect lap, going through it in my head last night, I thought maybe today we could be P6, P7 if everything goes well. I definitely had confidence we weren&#8217;t just a P10 car. I think with my driving style and where I&#8217;m at with the car, it was the direction that made me feel a little bit more confident. Already the car has been good to me, I felt good in it.
