Matthew Perry, who died Saturday at 54<\/a>, was one of the biggest TV stars of the past three decades thanks to his role on \u201cFriends,\u201d the blockbuster NBC sitcom that continues to be enormously popular in the streaming era.<\/p>\n The show looms so large and Perry\u2019s performance as Chandler Bing was so indelible that it can be difficult to think of him in any other context. But Perry had a long and varied career that included films, many other series and the occasional play<\/a>. Here are some of his most memorable performances and how to watch them.<\/p>\n Born and raised in Canada, Perry moved to Los Angeles as a teen to become an actor. He found early success, appearing in some of the 1980s most popular sitcoms (\u201cCharles in Charge,\u201d \u201cSilver Spoons,\u201d \u201cGrowing Pains\u201d) and dramas (\u201cHighway to Heaven,\u201d \u201cBeverly Hills, 90210\u201d). But his life changed forever when he was cast, at 24, as one-sixth of what would soon be TV\u2019s most famous group of attractive young Manhattanites.<\/p>\n As Chandler, Perry was the sharpest, funniest Friend. His instantly memorable quips and cadences were endlessly imitated by fans and sometimes co-stars. (Each of the Friends had a \u201cCould I be<\/em> any more \u2026\u201d punchline at some point.) Perry\u2019s well-known struggles with addiction are unavoidably linked to his time on the show \u2014 for instance, he said he went to rehab right after filming Monica and Chandler\u2019s wedding. But his performance remains mostly hilarious.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Stream it on <\/em>Max<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n The \u201cFriends\u201d stars all tried to make the jump to the big screen, with mixed results. Perry\u2019s first big movie role was as the lead of \u201cFools Rush In,\u201d a romantic comedy in which he plays a New York developer forced into a shotgun wedding with a photographer played by Salma Hayek. The tough guy is played by Bruce Willis, part of a deep cast that also includes Amanda Peet, Rosanna Arquette, Michael Clarke Duncan and Kevin Pollak.<\/p>\n Reviews were middling when it was released \u2014 The Times called it<\/a> \u201cunderwhelming, amusing only in fits and starts\u201d \u2014 but the cast keeps things light and entertaining and the film\u2019s reputation has improved over time. (You can give the sequel, \u201cThe Whole Ten Yards,\u201d of course, a pass though.)<\/p>\n Rent it on <\/em>Amazon<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>Google Play<\/em><\/a>; and <\/em>YouTube<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n During and after \u201cFriends,\u201d Perry guest-starred in acclaimed series including \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d \u201cScrubs,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d and \u201cCougar Town.\u201d His post- \u201cFriends\u201d starring vehicles were more of a mixed bag, including the Aaron Sorkin misfire \u201cStudio 60 on the Sunset Strip\u201d and \u201cMr. Sunshine,\u201d which Perry also created.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n The best was \u201cGo On,\u201d an NBC sitcom starring Perry as a freshly widowed sports-talk host who goes to group grief therapy. Created by the former \u201cFriends\u201d writer and producer Scott Silveri, it\u2019s funnier than it sounds.<\/p>\n Buy it on <\/em>Amazon<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Perry teamed with Thomas Lennon for a remake of one of the most famous sitcoms in history, which seems like a bad idea until you consider that the original was itself an adaptation of the 1968 film (which was based on the 1965 Neil Simon play).<\/p>\n As the rumpled, irritable Oscar Madison, Perry plays yet another sports-talk host, with Lennon as the finicky Felix Unger.
