The booklet is also twice the size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Neighbouring Finland has also just published its own fresh advice online on \u201cpreparing for incidents and crises\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sikkerhverdag.no\/globalassets\/din-beredskap\/brosjyrer-alle-sprak\/dsb-egenberedskap-engelsk-web.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Norwegians have also recently received a pamphlet;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Norwegians have also recently received a pamphlet<\/a> urging them to be prepared to manage on their own for a week in the event of extreme weather, war and other threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In a detailed section on military conflict, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suomi.fi\/guides\/preparedness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Finnish digital brochure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the Finnish digital brochure<\/a> explains how the government and president would respond in the event of an armed attack, stressing that Finland\u2019s authorities are \u201cwell prepared for self defence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Sweden joined Nato only this year, deciding like Finland to apply after Moscow expanded its war in 2022. Norway was a founder member of the Western defensive alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Unlike Sweden and Norway, the Helsinki government has decided not to print a copy for every home as it \u201cwould cost millions\u201d and a digital version could be updated more easily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWe have sent out 2.2 million paper copies, one for each household in Norway,\u201d said Tore Kamfjord, who is responsible for the campaign of self-preparedness at the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"col-body mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"relative text-sm mt-1 pr-2.5\">\n<p>Norway&#8217;s checklist includes longlife food and medicines including iodine tablets [sikkerhverdag.no]<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Included in the lists of items to be kept at home are long-life foods such as tins of beans, energy bars and pasta, and medicines including iodine tablets in case of a nuclear accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Oslo sent out an earlier version in 2018, but Kamfjord said climate change and more extreme weather events such as floods and landslides had brought increased risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">For Swedes, the idea of a civil emergency booklet is nothing new. The first edition of \u201cIf War Comes\u201d was produced during World War Two and it was updated during the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">But one message has been moved up from the middle of the booklet: \u201cIf Sweden is attacked by another country, we will never give up. All information to the effect that resistance is to cease is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">It was not long ago that Finland and Sweden were still neutral states, although their infrastructure and \u201ctotal defence system\u201d date back to the Cold War.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"col-body mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"Sweden's Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin holds a copy of  the new version of the preparedness booklet &quot;If the crisis or war comes&quot;. Sweden, however, scaled down its infrastructure and only in recent years started gearing up again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cFrom the Finnish perspective, this is a bit strange,\u201d according to Ilmari Kaihko, associate professor of war studies at the Swedish Defence University. \u201c[Finland] never forgot that war is a possibility, whereas in Sweden, people had to be shaken up a bit to understand that this can actually happen,&#8221; says Kaihko, who&#8217;s from Finland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Melissa Eve Ajosmaki, 24, who is originally from Finland but studies in Gothenburg, says she felt more worried when the war broke out in Ukraine. \u201cNow I feel less worried but I still have the thought at the back of my head on what I should do if there was a war. Especially as I have my family back in Finland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"col-body mb-4\">\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"grid grid-cols-[[fullbleed-start_body-start]_auto_[body-end_fullbleed-end]]\">\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-67935464?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Swedish alarm after defence chiefs' war warning;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Swedish alarm after defence chiefs&#8217; war warning<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<div class=\"grid grid-cols-[[fullbleed-start_body-start]_auto_[body-end_fullbleed-end]]\">\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-68506223?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sweden formally joins Nato military alliance;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sweden formally joins Nato military alliance<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The guides include instructions on what to do in case of several scenarios and ask citizens to make sure they can fend for themselves, at least initially, in case of a crisis situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Finns are asked how they would cope without power for days on end with winter temperatures as low as -20C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Their checklist also includes iodine tablets, as well as easy-to-cook food, pet food and a backup power supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The Swedish checklist recommends potatoes, cabbage, carrots and eggs along with tins of bolognese sauce and prepared blueberry and rosehip soup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Swedish Economist Ingemar Gustafsson, 67, recalls receiving previous versions of the pamphlet: \u201cI&#8217;m not that worried about the whole thing so I take it pretty calmly.
