Warsaw responded days later by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-belarus-defector-judge-espionage-tomasz-szmydt-70b927135e927b983e7df4f648dced43\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:putting Szmydt on a wanted list;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">putting Szmydt on a wanted list<\/a>, a step toward an international arrest warrant on spying allegations that would restrict his ability to travel internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Polish officials have been working to determine how harmful Szmydt\u2019s knowledge of any classified information might be to the interests of Warsaw and its Western allies. Poland\u2019s Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-tusk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Donald Tusk;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Donald Tusk<\/a> has publicly called him a traitor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Szmydt fled to Belarus after resigning from his post as a judge at the Warsaw Administrative Court, saying in a public statement that he was doing so in protest against Poland\u2019s \u201charmful and unjust\u201d policy toward Belarus and Russia. A short time later, he appeared at a press conference in Belarus, praising Lukashenko\u2019s regime and presenting himself as a victim of repression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A Polish court later that month lifted Szmydt\u2019s immunity, allowing him to be tried in absentia for spying allegations that he has denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Szmydt was notorious in Poland for having engaged in a 2019 online smear campaign against other judges that was sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-spyware-pegasus-nso-group-israel-413bb3cb27daac011d52b524c6d16160\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Justice Ministry under the previous right-wing government;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Justice Ministry under the previous right-wing government<\/a>. Three years later, he appeared to switch sides, appearing in a TV documentary to expose what he said was unethical behavior by judges close to the ruling party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Szmydt\u2019s defection came as a shock in Poland, which has a history of distrust of Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Belarus has been one of the Kremlin\u2019s few close allies since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Lukashenko has relied on Moscow&#8217;s subsidies and support.
