This chaotic spectacle is one of the Japanese prefecture\u2019s \u201cdanjiri matsuri,\u201d or float festivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Held over a few weeks in October, they\u2019re considered one of the most dangerous events on Japan\u2019s festival calendar. The floats weigh several tons, and accidents sometimes occur while navigating them around sharp corners. Each danjiri is adorned with hundreds of individual figures, chiseled by hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Today, artisans like Akihiko Maeda continue the tradition. The 48-year-old gave up riding the danjiri about a decade ago, but still builds and restores floats for communities in Osaka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI\u2019ve been working mainly on danjiri for several decades now,\u201d Maeda says. \u201cI\u2019m constantly trying to find ways to capture the cool poses of the sculptures, so that they look as if they\u2019re about to start moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Maeda says the process of making a bespoke danjiri can take five years. In 2020, almost 28% of Osaka\u2019s population was over 65, compared to the global average of just over 9%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Kazuma Nakao, who has participated in Otori\u2019s danjiri festival for over 40 years, says there aren\u2019t enough physically-able people required to pull their float.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWe need to borrow people from other districts. Every town is like that now,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">What this year\u2019s cohort lacks in numbers, they make up for in enthusiasm.
