He was cleared of a charge of planting fake bombs in his military barracks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Prosecutors said Khalife played a \u201ccynical game\u201d by claiming he wanted to be a spy after he had delivered a large amount of restricted and classified material to Iran, including the names of special forces officers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-body md:hidden\">\n<div class=\"mx-auto mb-5 flex flex-col overflow-hidden rounded-xl pb-5 shadow-[0_0_1px_rgba(200,160,251,.63),0_2px_6px_1px_#F3E6FE]\">\n<h4 class=\"m-auto block px-4 pb-4 pt-2 text-lg font-bold leading-6\">Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox<\/h4>\n<p class=\"m-auto px-4 pb-4 text-sm font-normal\">See for yourself \u2014 The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Khalife testified that he had been in touch with people in the Iranian government but that it was all part of a ploy to ultimately work as a double-agent for Britain, a scheme he said he got from watching the TV show \u201cHomeland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI wanted to utilize my background to further our national security,\u201d he told jurors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Defense lawyer Gul Nawaz Hussein said Khalife\u2019s aspirations to be James Bond were na\u00efve, stupid and bordered on slapstick. He said his client was more \u201cScooby Doo\u201d than \u201c007.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Khalife\u2019s case had not received much attention until he escaped from a London prison in September 2023 and went on the run for three days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Khalife was being held on the charges in Wandsworth Prison when he escaped from the kitchen by strapping himself to the bottom of a delivery truck. He was ultimately nabbed on a canal path.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">During his trial, Khalife pleaded guilty to the escape, but continued to contest the spying charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Khalife joined the Army at 16 and was assigned to the Royal Corps of Signals, a communications unit that is deployed with battlefield troops, as well as special forces and intelligence squads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">He was told he could not join the intelligence service because his mother is from Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">At 17, he reached out to a man connected with Iranian intelligence and began passing along information, prosecutors said.
