{"id":3906,"date":"2023-10-30T06:06:31","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T10:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/home-office-accused-of-delays-to-reunite-family\/30\/10\/2023\/"},"modified":"2023-10-30T06:06:31","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T10:06:31","slug":"home-office-accused-of-delays-to-reunite-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/home-office-accused-of-delays-to-reunite-family\/30\/10\/2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Office accused of delays to reunite family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A charity supporting an Eritrean family that waited three years to be reunited has accused the Home Office of &#8220;inexcusably long&#8221; delays.<\/p>\n<p>Eight-year-old Luilana&#8217;s visa to get to the UK was initially refused in 2021 but successfully appealed a year later.<\/p>\n<p>She was then, however, forced to flee war, travelling between three countries before meeting her mother again this month in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Office has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every day she was all I dreamed of, and I worried if she was alive or dead,&#8221; said Luilana&#8217;s mother, Yordanos, who arrived in the UK in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Had I not had Luilana with me now, I would have lived my life divided in two. It really is a blessing that she is here with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Refugee and Migrant Centre charity said the family should have been together much sooner, maintaining that despite meeting criteria to legally bring a child into the UK, they faced obstacles that could have been avoided.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 540px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-lightbox caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-lightbox-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/2KQHDqnc6wh44rx17MTWyQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTE5NTI7aD0xMDk4\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/7f99465c42fb7527452980fe67281480\"><span class=\"caas-img-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The family in Birmingham\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/52eWzch5EH.0Ls0K_IAKZQ--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA--\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/7f99465c42fb7527452980fe67281480\" class=\"caas-img\"\/><button class=\"link caas-lightbox\" aria-label=\"View larger image\" data-ylk=\"sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;elm:expand;itc:1\"><span class=\"openArrows icon\"><svg width=\"22\" height=\"22\" viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\"><path d=\"M12.372 0.92C12.372 0.414 12.782 0.004 13.287 0.004L21 0L20.996 7.712C20.996 8.217 20.586 8.628 20.08 8.628C19.574 8.628 19.164 8.217 19.164 7.712V3.183L12.337 10.011L10.988 8.663L17.816 1.835H13.287C12.782 1.835 12.372 1.425 12.372 0.92ZM1.835 17.816L8.663 10.988L10.012 12.337L3.183 19.164H7.712C8.218 19.164 8.627 19.574 8.627 20.08C8.627 20.586 8.218 20.995 7.712 20.995L0 21L0.004 13.287C0.004 12.782 0.414 12.372 0.92 12.372C1.425 12.372 1.835 12.782 1.835 13.287V17.816Z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">The family moved to Birmingham to be with Yordanos&#8217; partner Yanos<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Their story began in February 2020 after Yordanos secured a spouse visa to leave Eritrea and join partner Yanos in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>He came to the UK as an Eritrean refugee in 2012, but to sponsor his partner and child he had to meet a minimum income threshold of \u00a322,400, which he managed by working extra shifts.<\/p>\n<p>The family decided to separate mother and daughter&#8217;s applications after advice from community leaders in Eritrea.<\/p>\n<p>But the Home Office turned down Luilana&#8217;s visa and she was left in the care of her aunt in Sudan while her mother moved to Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2021, the West Midlands-based Refugee and Migrant Centre began an appeal on the family&#8217;s behalf and a court overturned the visa decision in August 2022.<\/p>\n<p>However, in April 2023, conflict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-65284948?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:erupted in Sudan between rival groups;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">erupted in Sudan between rival groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Luilana and her aunt were taken to safety in South Sudan and, weeks later, travelled to neighbouring Uganda to be closer to an immigration centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were air strikes and Luilana was not well until they reached Uganda,&#8221; Yordanos said.
