The Chittagong District Bar Association, however, refuted claims repeatedly shared by media organisations in neighbouring Hindu-majority India that the deceased lawyer was representing the Hindu monk. A court document released by the Bangladesh government separately showed a different lawyer was handling the case.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Bangladesh: Muslim lawyer representing ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das killed!&#8221; read part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/N8AA-DTMB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook post<\/a> shared on November 27, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">It added the killing was part of a so-called &#8220;deep state&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.364B4YJ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:conspiracy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">conspiracy<\/a> to ignite war between Muslim-majority Bangladesh and its Hindu-majority neighbour India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The post included what appeared to be a report from India&#8217;s Republic TV. He had been a member of the more mainstream ISKCON, commonly called the Hare Krishna movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Police said a public prosecutor was killed in the chaos, naming him as Saiful Islam Alif, a Muslim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Similar posts that Alif was representing Brahmachari in his case were also published by other Indian media organisations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/8WWJ-C2L3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:FirstPost;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">FirstPost<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/K2ZX-VNF9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Economic Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Economic Times<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/T8FX-K2RM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Live Mint;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Live Mint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/AW89-VDVB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Asianet News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Asianet News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Posts on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/ZDE7-XAHQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:social media site X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">social media site X<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241211124947\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fsudhir.arya.5%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0AFhQQL9GYg9k9BhSNapdB1h1YSZf8orcmSgcYUGBNc261M6GcTx78GHPCoaQKyBdl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Facebook<\/a> also shared the claims.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Different lawyer<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">But the claims are false, according to Nazimuddin Chowdhury, president of the Chittagong District Bar Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;The deceased lawyer was neither defending Chinmoy Das nor was he in the prosecution team. Alif was killed by the violent mob on his way back home,&#8221; Chowdhury told AFP on December 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;A case was filed following the murder and 11 persons were arrested by the law enforcing agencies,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Bangladesh&#8217;s interim government &#8212; led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus &#8212; also branded the claims as &#8220;false&#8221;\u00a0in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0tD7icwWQdwBzP5bP2nZaDYoZqepokWpqWotVU4xiyVg9P7KECgTzfkrWLBtDM8jJl&amp;id=61567837643938&amp;rdid=foCcA8tj3cuDM30O\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a> shared on Facebook on November 27 (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/DP5A-XAWL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Some Indian media are claiming that lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was brutally murdered in Chattagram today, was representing Chinmoy Krishna Das. The claim is false and is being spread with malafide intention,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">It added Brahmachari is being represented by a lawyer named Subasish Sharma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The interim government&#8217;s press wing also provided journalists a copy of Brahmachari&#8217;s bail application plea which bore lawyer Subasish Sharma&#8217;s name. Nowhere in the filing was Alif&#8217;s name indicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Below are screenshots from the document showing a stamp with
