Around 30 people have been killed in renewed Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian media reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Israeli fighter planes attacked a former school building in the al-Daraj quarter in Gaza City, where displaced people were sheltering, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.<\/p>\n
At least eight people died in the attack, WAFA said.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military said it had conducted “a precise strike on Hamas terrorists who were operating inside a command and control centre in the area of Daraj Tuffah.” The strike had occurred overnight, it said.<\/p>\n
WAFA also reported a targeted air attack on a vehicle in Gaza City in which four Palestinians were killed.<\/p>\n
A further 16 people had been killed in attacks in the centre and in the south of the Gaza Strip, it said.<\/p>\n
WAFA reported that Israeli forces were continuing to demolish residential buildings in the northern area of the Nuseirat refugee camp, in central Gaza, adding that shelling remained heavy throughout the region.<\/p>\n
According to Palestinian sources, more than 45,200 people have been killed since the start of the Gaza war following the October 7, 2023 attack mounted by the Palestinian militant Hamas movement from the Gaza Strip. The attack claimed 1,200 lives and saw more than 250 people abducted.<\/p>\n
Member of Palestinian security forces killed in Jenin<\/strong><\/p>\n Later on Sunday, a member of the Palestinian security forces was killed and two others injured during an operation against armed Palestinians in Jenin, a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority (PA) said.<\/p>\n The armed men had opened fire on the security forces in the refugee camp, the spokesman said.<\/p>\n This is the first fatality among the security forces since the start of the campaign in Jenin at the start of the month. Three residents were also killed, including a leading member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militant group.<\/p>\n Jenin is known as a stronghold of militant Palestinians and is frequently raided by the Israeli army. Observers believe the PA fears an armed uprising in the West Bank and a loss of control similar to that in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n In 2006, Hamas won the last Palestinian parliamentary election. The following year, they violently took sole control of the Gaza Strip, expelling the more moderate Fatah from the area.<\/p>\n Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas leads the Palestinian Authority as well as the secular Palestinian organisation Fatah and since then has effectively only governed in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
