The Lebanese military said that Syrian militants had fired at Lebanese soldiers along the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ahmad al-Shara, Syria\u2019s new de facto leader, faces the challenge of imposing order on a country that has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/01\/world\/middleeast\/syria-rebel-groups-army.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">devastated by 14 years of civil war<\/a> that split it into multiple warring regions and spurred a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/world\/middleeast\/syria-rebels-government-assad.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">proliferation of armed groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. al-Shara, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Islamist group that spearheaded the surprise attack that toppled Mr. al-Assad, has worked to project a moderate image, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/03\/world\/middleeast\/syria-damascus-visit-foreign-ministers.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">meeting with Western dignitaries<\/a> and trying to assure both Syrians and foreign governments that the country is on a stable path.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prime Minister Najib Mikati of Lebanon spoke with Mr. al-Shara to discuss the border violence, according to the Lebanese leader\u2019s office. During the call, Mr. al-Shara pledged that \u201cthe Syrian authorities are doing everything necessary to restore calm on the border and prevent the matter from recurring,\u201d Mr. Mikati\u2019s office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities in countries bordering Syria had feared that Mr. Assad\u2019s ouster would lead to chaos that could spill over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In eastern Syria, Turkish-backed fighters are continuing to fight Kurdish forces, which have carved out an autonomous region. At the same time, there have been scattered clashes between the new regime and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/28\/world\/middleeast\/syria-government-arrests-human-rights.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">holdouts still loyal to Mr. al-Assad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Saturday, forces affiliated with the new Syrian government were searching for \u201cremnants of the Assadist militias\u201d near the central city of Homs, the SANA state media agency reported, after arresting two former officials overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an attempt to head off potential attacks from Syrian territory, Israeli forces have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-strikes-syria-military.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bombarded military sites<\/a> across the country and sent their troops into a once-demilitarized buffer zone between the two sides. Jordan also partly closed its ground crossing with Syria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. al-Shara and his allies have sought to dissolve the remaining militant groups under the aegis of a single armed force. The Israeli military says it has no intention of immediately evacuating the roughly 20 patients and medical workers in the compound. Israel has repeatedly raided hospitals since the start of the war in Gaza, saying that Hamas uses them as military bases.
