The photojournalist who shot the footage confirmed it showed a practice exercise in Lucknow, the capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. A spokesman for the national railway authority also said there had been no such accident in the city.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Massive accident in the capital Lucknow at 3:00 am on 26\/12\/2024, <span>lakhs (hundreds of thousands) of people<\/span> have died and thousands injured,&#8221; reads Hindi-language text on an <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/8YDZ-ZMCC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram video;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Instagram video<\/a> shared on December 27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The clip, which was viewed more than 3,000 times, shows the smouldering wreck of a train carriage piled up on a burning compartment. one commented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Another wrote: &#8220;This is the result of government&#8217;s corruption; the common man suffers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">India has one of the world&#8217;s largest rail networks and has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20240618-survivors-recall-horror-of-deadly-double-indian-train-crash\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:several disasters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">several disasters<\/a> over the years (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250108014502\/https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20240618-survivors-recall-horror-of-deadly-double-indian-train-crash\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The worst occurred in 1981 when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar state, killing an estimated 800 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Nearly 300 people were killed in a three-train collision in Odisha state in June 2023, when a packed passenger train was mistakenly diverted onto a loop line and slammed into a stationary goods train loaded with iron ore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The clip circulating online, however, shows a train accident drill for local rescue workers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg font-bold\"><strong>Safety drill<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video found the same footage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DDyjSMxsBrv\/?igsh=MXA2ZGU2cTdzNmR3Nw%3D%3D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:posted;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">posted<\/a> on Instagram by Lucknow-based photojournalist Kumar Raidas on December 20 (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/CQ8H-SEVF?type=image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Mock drill of the train accident in capital Lucknow,&#8221; Raidas, a photojournalist with the Times of India newspaper, told AFP on January 6, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Deepak Kumar, chief public relations officer of Northern Railway also told AFP the video showed a practice exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;Northern Railway is conducting many such safety drills for the Kumbh Mela so that we are prepared for any situation,&#8221; he said on January 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;The video is being shared with a false claim. No such accident has taken place in Lucknow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">News outlets\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4iN4Sm9lEtY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Aaj Tak;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Aaj Tak<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhaskar.com\/local\/uttar-pradesh\/lucknow\/video\/horrible-train-accident-in-alambagh-lucknow-134153209.html?type=video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dainik Bhaskar;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Dainik Bhaskar<\/a> also reported on the drill (archived <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/4EKE-P9B5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/6LSU-YF3V\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:here;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A red sign attached to one of the train carriages, visible at the beginning of the Dainik Bhaskar video report reads &#8220;Mock drill on train accident&#8221;
