For the songwriter Diane Warren, it\u2019s like going outside to pick up the mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over the past four decades, Warren has racked up 15 Academy Award nominations for best original song, a Grammy Award and many radio hits. You\u2019ve probably heard, say, \u201cNothing\u2019s Gonna Stop Us Now\u201d (co-written with Albert Hammond, recorded by the band Starship, featured in the 1987 movie \u201cMannequin\u201d), Toni Braxton\u2019s 1996 hit \u201cUn-Break My Heart\u201d or Cher\u2019s 1989 hit \u201cIf I Could Turn Back Time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">How does Warren do it? (And she is indeed still doing it \u2014 her last nomination was in 2023, for the Becky G song \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=COXSy3rp6Vc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Fire Inside<\/a>,\u201d featured in the snack food comedy \u201cFlamin\u2019 Hot.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More than once in this up-close-and-personal documentary Warren refuses to share her process. Yet \u201cRelentless,\u201d directed by Bess Kargman, gives us some idea, like when Warren says that she put a dramatic half-step change in one of her songs because her lack of formal training meant she didn\u2019t know it was a music theory no-no. The famous talking heads here, Cher among them, affectionately and amusingly chronicle what a royal pain to work with Warren can be. More poignant is the revelation that, despite being the writer of dozens of anthemic love songs, Warren has no great amour of her own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Warren also had a painful upbringing with a distant mother. But one of the movie\u2019s most heartwarming anecdotes involves her father bringing her to a songwriting competition. Even if you don\u2019t care for Warren\u2019s tunes, this movie is likely to make you a fan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Diane Warren: Relentless<\/strong><br \/>Not rated.
