{"id":40768,"date":"2025-01-11T03:18:54","date_gmt":"2025-01-11T08:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/spacecraft-makes-final-flyby-of-smallest-planet-in-solar-system\/11\/01\/2025\/"},"modified":"2025-01-11T03:18:54","modified_gmt":"2025-01-11T08:18:54","slug":"spacecraft-makes-final-flyby-of-smallest-planet-in-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssprinters.com\/index.php\/world\/spacecraft-makes-final-flyby-of-smallest-planet-in-solar-system\/11\/01\/2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Spacecraft makes final flyby of smallest planet in solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A spacecraft operated by the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has made its final flyby of Mercury, as scientists now work to guide BepiColombo into the planet\u2019s orbit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">During the sixth flyby, the ESA expected the spacecraft would fly less than 200 miles above the Swift Planet, while conducting measurements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/mercury\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mercury;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Mercury<\/a>\u2019s magnetic field and capturing stunning images.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The mission, which has largely been deemed a success, has completed six flybys of the planet since 2021, each time studying features such as craters and the planet&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/BepiColombo\/Top_three_images_from_BepiColombo_s_sixth_Mercury_flyby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:space agency has released images;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">space agency has released images<\/a> that show a rocky, crater-filled surface where previous lava flows likely occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">One of several previously unknown craters was spotted by BepiColombo&#8217;s cameras and was estimated to be nearly 100 miles across.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Following a request from the operations team, the International Astronomical Union recently named the crater &#8216;Stoddart&#8217; in honor of Margaret Olrog Stoddart, a renowned New Zealand artist known for her floral paintings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;When we were planning for this flyby, we saw that this crater would be visible and decided it would be worth naming due to its potential interest for BepiColombo scientists in the future,&#8221; David Rothery, a planetary professor and BepiColombo team member, previously stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/astronomy-stars-planet-what-sky\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Don\u2019t Miss These Celestial Events In 2025;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><strong>Don\u2019t Miss These Celestial Events In 2025<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Other large craters include the Caloris Basin, Hokusai, Shakespeare and Vivaldi, which are thought to have been created by impacts from large asteroids or comets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The spacecraft will continue its journey toward Mercury\u2019s orbit, where it will study the planet&#8217;s surface and magnetic field in greater detail for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;In 2027, the main science phase of the mission will begin. The spacecraft\u2019s suite of science instruments will reveal the invisible about the solar system\u2019s most mysterious planet, to better understand the origin and evolution of a planet close to its host star,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/BepiColombo\/BepiColombo_s_best_images_yet_highlight_fourth_Mercury_flyby\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the ESA stated;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the ESA stated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The mission is said to be running behind schedule due to limited propulsion produced by its electric thrusters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">A creative workaround was devised by the ESA flight team, which has kept the mission on track by taking advantage of the planet\u2019s gravitational pull to help slow down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/spaceflight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:spacecraft;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">spacecraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t wait to see what BepiColombo will reveal during this sixth and final flyby of Mercury.
